During that period Germany used 'Heil in the Siegerkranz' (the tune of God Save the Queen) as national anthem until 1918. It had been the royal anthem of Prussia since 1795.

I don't blame Bavarians if they don't consider that as 'their true history'
Bavarians are Bavarians first and foremost - sometimes they even joined forces with the Austrians to fight against the Prussians

This mosaic about German unification is found in the Victory Column in Berlin and shows the submission of the Bavarian crown to Germany like some conquered nation.

British marches don't bother me. I think thar it would have been far worse had we remained under the occupation of the other super power of the time - the French. Lesser of 2 evils.

are you aware that the Maltese wanted the Brits to take over (Kemm kienu gifa jahasra) as they were afraid that the Knights will be back or that we were going to fall under the Tsar of Russia.
Imagine we went on to be part of Russia how history would have been! Russia with a presence in the Med with chances to have colonies in Africa... and then the Communist uprising ! My God ...

P.S Gozo were independent for a couple of months until they had no choice and joined Malta under the Brits.

The first British flag was raised in Birkirkara by Vincenzo Brared who was the leader of the guerilla forces of both Birkirkara and Qormi against the French.

I remember the few last few years of the British very well...my dad was in the RAF. I think the Knights return or Russian takeover was more scaremongering to make the British overdue stay easier to swallow. To keep an overseas base running you needed naval strength and the real alternative to the Brits were the French. Russia's empire was neighbourung countries won by armies. Southern Italy was under the French. Look at North Africa and North America at that time only those 2 were the masters.

I think I posted that once. It's used as a tune by other countries too. Luxembourg or Liechtenstein was one if I remember correctly

Napoleon was ok but he left a mob behind him.
Had he stayed the story could have been different however I still think that Britain would have attacked us to take us from the French.

As for the German anthem: the current verse is not just more fitting with our (recent) history, it is also way more beautiful... And the original wasnot calling for defense (as most anthems do) - but it was (MIS-) used to call for attack...

But I still think you misunderstood my post, there I was only speaking about the music/composition of older versions. The German anthem that I referred to in my post was not 'Das lied der deutschen' (the naughty one with all 3 paragraphs that you refer to and which was used after the one I posted). It only borrowed Josef Haydn's music that was used in the the Austro/Hungarian - Gott erhalte Franz, den Kaiser one that I posted.

By the way coincidentally today is Josef Haydn's birthday as well !
