Honestly it's stupid that Sean is pronounced the way it is especially to non-native speakers. If you want to pronounce it Shawn at least spell it out as Seán like you're supposed to.

That may be so but I would argue (admittedly controversially) that we are native speakers. We have our own special variety known as Maltese English on which a lot of study has been done (mostly in Malta and Germany) so the majority don't quite speak a standard variety, but to me the fact that we have our own variety means we have to be considered native speakers, even though we have another language which is much more common throughout the country. This is the result of a number of factors but the fact remains that in the last census around 80% of the population claimed to have a high level of English (I assume means can communicate on any situation) and around another 10% claim to have a decent or average level. I would say that much of the remaining 10% is made up of immigrants, who obviously have different native tongues.

English is definitely facing some struggles here especially if we continue to see British Standard English as the benchmark. I have personally conducted a small-scale research project on national standard exams done by 16 and 18 year olds and found that Maltese English structures tend to be heavily punished while those who stick to British English get the top grades. While I'm one of the latter group I think this is misguided and the national curriculum should accept both as legitimate. However, with all of its difficulties, pronouncing Sean as "seen" is definitely not one of them and cannot be justified by our language situation.

Aah I had no idea. I thought English fluency amongst Maltese people is similar to that of the Dutch, that they are generally fluent because of education but English is still ultimately a second language.

Some might agree with you and I would even say I've heard "better" (i.e. standard) English in Sweden but I think our historical/linguistic situation says otherwise.

Referring to?

I have an unfortunate curse. When I read such sentences I ALWAYS read them in a certain person's voice. The problem is this person used to be a good friend of mine but I hate her now
