update :
My opinion on this ; It will never be returned (there is also the sword which won't be leaving the Louvre as it needs restoration) as if it does both the Louvre and the British Museum will end up empty because most of the items were looted...
And... both sword and dagger were given to the Order of St.John and not to us as a Nation... So if they are ever returned the Order might claim them back.
The best we can hope for is that they at least keep them here in their HQ in Fort St.Angelo.
Having said that as I already stated in the post before this, the true sword with which De Valette fought and lead our people, his Knights and other the other mercenaries against the Ottoman force is still here in the St.Laurence Church MUSEUM

I don't know why but the real name is de Valette. At least that's what the guide told me when I organised a tour to the national library in Valletta 2 years ago.
If I were to guess I would say that it became De La Valette because of the city... "La" is the definite article.

Ta’ Bistra Catacombs
Located half way between the ancient town of Melite and the once-important harbour of Salina, the Ta’ Bistra catacombs are, so far, the largest set of tombs and catacombs accessible beyond the confines of the ancient city of the Island.
They were first recorded in the late 1800s but were only investigated in 1933 by Captain Charles Zammit before part of the site was covered over by a new road leading down to Burmarrad. Further studies in 2004, 2013 and 2014 have brought the site back to life with new discoveries and hence, new interpretations. [source]
