Same here. Although I don't remember the event, apparently when I was very young we had a swing in our garden and I was left alone on it and there was this huge snake somehow entered the garden from a hole in the wall. My mother saw it from the kitchen window with a view of the garden and rushed outside to take me in. I was young/small enough that it could have killed me.
I have absolutely no recollection of this and for all I know it could be made up (doubt it ), but I have a huge fear of snakes which I have always attributed to be a subconscious effect of this.
You don't see many snakes in Malta. I could count the times I've seen one on one hand probably. I saw one very recently while I was on my way to go watch the CL final. I was walking while answering a phone call and I saw something on the floor (residential area) and I thought it was just some piece of plastic or something, then I saw it move. Didn't run but gave me quite a start (and a couple of curses )... I'm surprised my phone didn't fly out of my hand.
After the game as I was walking back to my car I realised there was a construction site right next to where I saw it, which is probably how it ended up in a residential zone. I guess it was scared of me and ran there when it saw me approach.
I fear the fact that an exotic one might escape from its owner gives me shivers...
