In my opinion, no doubt Joe makes the best music. I think the merits of movie score composers are very difficult to judge though. Comparing those who are recognised as the greatest, I like to think that John Williams' music has the most...personality, in the sense that it reminds you of the characters, in a way it resonates with whatever you see on screen. The scores come out of the characters, the setting, the actual scene. Makes it feel more unique. On the other side, Hans Zimmer's scores define the setting. He tells you what to feel and think. That way his music may have a bit more impact. Not that either side is better, just my thoughts when I'm trying to compare them.

Think Joe Hisaishi falls under the former category, especially since I've only watched the Studio Ghibli animations. If they are to be compared strictly as musical pieces he's definitely the greatest.

I agree, and you should watch the movies in which he has provided the scores for filmmaker 'Beat' Takeshi, like Sonatine, Kids Return and Hana-bi, among others, not to mention "Departures", the first Japanese movie to win an Oscar.

Nah. Hans Zimmer is the best musician of our time. I have heard a lot of his soundtracks before watching the movie and even as normal music, it sounded amazing. And his skillset is very vast. Just listen to the below video. It doesn't have his signature dramatic violin or cellos, but a lot of vocals. It still creates this amazing feeling.

On the other hand, "lost but won" sounds so modern with the aggressive cellos and drums.

And then we have this, pure classical music.

Hans Zimmer is a musical genius and I am pretty sure that he will be talked about just like Mozart and Beethoven. The feeling he creates through his music is just timeless.
