Rewatch the match and the match against Karlsruhe and you see Alonso is lost everytime he is the last man defending in a 1 on 1...

I said it first. :coffee:

I'm wasn't even arguing that Xabi should be a centerback (hint: he shouldn't be, he's not the quickest and it takes away his strength) over Martinez, so you can stop being German-touchy-passive-aggressive. The moment Kramaric I think got a shot on target for one Alonso should never have been the last man. It's a good thing he was even in position to defend because he did exactly what he was supposed to: showed the man to the outside. He didn't do it the best but he got the job down, and outside of that in midfield Xabi dominated.

He had two one-on-ones as the last man and was easily beaten simply with a change of a pace. A better finisher would have scored.

I have said before that if he is around the ball he is a very good tackler and ball-winner due to his intelligence and defensive technique, for which he is underrated and that is the reason that wherever he played, his teams were able to control the midfield battles. But he has no legs to run after people anymore. So yes, he can still be a very decent defender against teams where Bayern can play in a short field and the presence of other athletes which cover enough ground will help him. But if and when the game gets stretched, as top teams will surely be able to do, Alonso is simply a dead body out there. If anything it is even more visible right now whereas last year it wasn't until the Barca game where he was truly exposed. If we are not playing with Thiago-Vidal at the base of the midfield, we will be eaten alive by a very physical and athletic Juve team.

I'm not sure why you posted this in the first place, considering we're talking about Alonso as a center back and not a midfielder.

Fair game. I don't want him as the last man either. I simply read your statement about him being a bad defender as talking about his overall defensive game, including as a midfielder. When it gets to the point that Alonso is the last man defending when he is supposed to be our defensive midfielder, that speaks to a failure of multiple players to defend properly.

endrity wrote:It seemed like Alonso was the furthest back most of the time

This statement I don't understand where that analysis came from, because the back line was clearly supposed to be Kimmich and Badstuber. Alonso only rotated into the back line whenever Kimmich came out with the ball, and if Alonso is the last man back that means the ball was lost with Kimmich out of position.

I cant even imagine what all his injuries had to make with his self-esteem.
It has to be terrible, live with fact that I am injury prone and every season I am out of squad due to my injuries :?

And from personal experience, living with the fear of reinjuring yourself so you limit the amount of movement and risks you take. I think this could hinder your performance.

It was supposed to be two to three, now it's already four. Not a good omen in respect to prior failed predictions.
