Martinez in team training today! I wonder if he'll be able to play a few minutes on Saturday. Not that there is exactly any need to rush him back into the line-up.

Let's not get too excited. Martínez participated in PART of the team training that involved a fraction of the squad, given that most players are out with their international team, or injured. It'll be some time before he can take part in full team training. Sorry for dampening the mood.

Priority is for him to stay healthy for the second part of the season. Take it easy Javi and come back stronger!

Yeah... we should not let him get involved in match action before October.... and then, gradually!

Let's not force his return, we'll need him most in the second half of the season...

Both him and Badsturber should play sparingly the first half. About once in two weeks. And then be ready to go in January.

Formations are like telephone numbers, meaningless. xD

No, really.... The middle CB in a back 3 is the same deeper midfielder in a 433… what position he plays nominally is meaningless.

It's not about where he stays, but about what his role is. It's not about the telephone number, is about what his tactical instructions are

In midfield he can initiate attacks and move forward with the ball. He cannot do that as a CB in a 4-men backline, because it would leave Boateng with half of the pitch to cover for himself

Sure, but we don't really do 4 men defense lately. Plus, my point was precisely that his instructions are the same regardless of whether he is nominally the middle CB or the deepest MF.

We'll be forced to play a 4-men defense since Benatia & Badstuber are out

A backline with Boa/Javi/Alaba would basically mean two attacking liberos and one traditional CB - which would mean we need fullbacks too, which would mean another big fuss with playtime

You're underestimating Pep hahahaha... I'm sure his dream is to play with no real CBs. He actually compromises on that a bit, and loves playing with a single one. A back 3 of Alaba-Javi-Boa is precisely what I expect Pep to field.

After two years under Pep, I wouldn't be surprised. But starting a Boa/Alaba/Javi against Arsenal would be pure suicide, this isn't a tired Leverkusen (after the Lazio match) we're talking about. If Arsenal could park the bus and counter-attack against Chelsea (!), they'd try the same against us
