This just keeps going downhill... Sad for Franck. Hopefully he can stay positive, though I wonder if retirement is becoming a possibility.

I think this is becoming Mehmet Scholl no. 2. Scholl was also finished at the age of 31 after 2002/2003 season but remained till the end of 2006/2007 when he retired - as a substitution without important role in the team. Injuries can really spoil everything. Ribery's problems started in the New Year 2014, immediately after he lost the Golden Ball award from Cristiano.

Some part of his salary must be performance related ie the number of matches he is fit for, number of minutes played, chances created etc

I assumed he is talking about his base salary not the other bonuses in his contract

The Insurance covers a player's salary partially or totally when sidelined for an extended period of time.
