Apparently this is the worst stadium in the tournament and there should be genuine fears.

Howedes or Mustafi are great backups, I'm not worried. I hope he is fit for a potential QF though, he'll be needed then.

Tbh if they need Boateng to beat Slovakia, they have no chance of winning this tournament. Hopefully they won't take any unnecessary chances by playing him if he's not fully fit.

I'd rather rest Boa. We have Mustafi, Howedes, and Tah, all of which could be starters in defense for almost any other team in the competition.

Why is everyone so rapidly naming Mustafi as a competent substitute for Boateng? He made one good match. One. Against the group's weakest team. And he needed Boateng none too few many times to save his ass. Not to mention that ridiculous miscommunication with Neuer.
Slovakia shouldn't be underestimated. This isn't a qualifier. One wrong step, even if it is small, can lead to disaster. This match is at least as important as an eventual QF against Italy or Spain.
If Boateng can play, then he should.

Marcotti:

If Gomez gets the nod against Slovakia -- as appears likely -- he could end up being the difference maker. Even if it means butting heads with Martin Skrtel and wearing him down for an hour so, that's OK. Gomez is a throwback to a different brand of German football, but sometimes it's necessary to go retro.

Honigstein:

Far from making a huge step toward resurrecting a career that has stalled since his winning goal in the World Cup final two years ago, Gotze has replicated his club form all too faithfully in France. . . the mercurial boy they once called, quite earnestly, "Germany's answer to Messi" has grown into a man who's playing as if he's shackled by an invisible ball and chain. He's lost both the explosive pace and confidence needed to beat opponents.

Honigstein always knows what to say. He is by far my favourite German football reporter by 80 miles.
