IMO the 2002 WC should've been Italy's... not the 2006.

Yea I agree in that change before a major match is usually bad, especially when it seems that we've found the winning formula. If anything, exchange Ozil for Schweinsteiger and pair him with khedira and push Kroos up front.

Back then when I was just a kid following the hype it definitely seemed like a victory for Asian football, but now I've definitely realised that it was bollocks

True enough. And also, shouldn't past World Cups start losing worth after some time. I mean, Italy has four, but even ignoring the cheating, two of them were from 78+ years ago. Can you really compare '34,'38,'82,'06 with '54,'74,'90,14? I mean, you can give Italy credit for reaching four first, but if you look at it from a standpoint of whose four mean more now, Germany is miles ahead.

Really! From their cynical play to dirty play to downright cheating, it's hard to have sympathy for them. They got a taste of their own medicine there.

Well, it's true that it was easier to win the tournament in the past, but I strongly disagree with those who say older titles count less. I've heard the same thing being said for the CL and also for the local titles here in Malta.

As far as the EURO is concerned, Germany's first title (and Italy's only won) came from a tournament consisting of just 4 teams. Germany's second was played between 8 teams with no KO stage, except for the final. Were they easier than 2016? Probably, but they still had to qualify to play in that tournament and with so few places, that was harder.

Then again Italy's two games in 1968 were won by a coin toss and a replay.

It's not the size of the tournaments back then that matters, nor is it the idea that they were "easier to win", for if they were easier for Italy, then they were easier for Germany and Spain and England and everybody else who entered (Germany chose not to enter '60 and '64).

It's simply the age of the victories that devalues them in my eyes. A nice formula to gauge the current relevance of championships (in this case World Cups) would be a simple 1,2,3, etc. point system. One point for World Cup number one, all the way up to twenty points for the most recent World Cup. Add each teams World Cup Championships using that formula and it looks like this:

Brazil: 6+7+9+15+17 = 54
Germany: 5+10+14+20= 49
Italy: 2+3+12+18= 35

The most exciting match is coming in the next couple of days. I think even more exciting than previous matches in 2012 and 2006.

I believe Italy will continue their fantastic run against the Germans. They just can't lose and even now when they're weak I still can't say that the stronger, but unconvincing Germany will finally win them. In case of Italy and Germany clashes, friendly matches are completely irrelevant. What happens in the tournaments is only what it counts.
