For me, three keys to this game:
1) Boateng and Hummels shut down Pelle and Eder
2) Schweinsteiger starts and bosses the midfield in the absence of Motta
3) Julian Draxler takes Darmian or Florenzi on and creates opportunities for Muller and Gomez

Playing through the middle is useless in this game, Germany have to utilize Ozil and particularly Draxler to break down the flanks, I think Kimmich is also a big factor if he can overlap well on the right hand side.

I see a lot of talk about Motta naming him as some key absence for Italy, but the truth is that against Spain he didn't even start the match and came on in the second half. He's not THAT important.

How are Italy at set pieces? I can't recall any particularly dangerous ones in this EURO and looking at their squad I can't identify a contemporary Pirlo or Del Piero. That alone is a huge advantage over other times we have faced them

Germany would need to be wary of Pelle during set pieces and they'll be fine.

I agree with you, but, De Rossi picked up a hip injury and is 50/50 for the game, and Motta is out for sure, so their midfield looks very uncertain right now. I never hope for injuries though, may the best team win.

I hope he recovers so we don't have to hear excuses when Germany steamroll over Italy. I call a 5-0.

He was being used to cover and protect the team when in lead.
He makes some dirty work, interrupts the flow of the game by making small fouls, wastes time etc.
So I think he is imp.

they have good players in the air. Apart Chiellini; both Barzagli and Bonucci are also dangerous.
De Rossi is good as well. Candreva missed the game vs Spain but he should recover in time.
This Lazio man is very fast and has some good technique...
If he plays Hector will be in for a busy night.
I just hope that Loew does not an idiotic experiment as he did in 2012 and he sticks to what we have been seeing

I'm not worried about headers. They did nothing vs Alaba and Kimmich, we can outmatch them in the air. The important thing is that there are no deadly free kick takers like Pirlo, even though I trust Neuer. I consider that a huge positive as it used to be one of Italy's most dangerous qualities, especially against a good defence.

At the World Cup, Germany struggled up to the quarter-final. It’s true they beat Portugal 4-0, but that was after the early dismissal of Pepe. Ghana and Algeria both could have beaten them with a kinder run of the ball. But then Jogi Low sorted out his problems at centre-forward and at right-back by restoring the veteran Miroslav Klose to the line-up and pushing Philipp Lahm back to his more orthodox position at full-back. History, it seems, may be repeating itself.

Klose and Lahm both retired after the World Cup, leaving Germany with major problems. They lost twice in qualifying and never looked defensively secure. In recent friendlies they’ve lost to both England and Slovakia. In this tournament, they seemed to be repeating the pattern of a decade under Low: either very good at defending (and unable to score) or very good at attacking (and unable to defend) with little balance in between.

Against Ukraine, both facets were seen within the same game, an immaculately controlled final half-hour helping to erase the memory of the sloppiness of what had gone before. Against Poland, it was all control, a solid shape but very little fluency. But then, as he did in Brazil, Low restored a traditional centre-forward and found a right-back. The change in Germany has been remarkable. [source]

I hardly ever give Löw credit for anything, but if he wins this whole tournament hats off to him I have to say.

Agreed. I didn't think he'd have it in him to make the changes we all wanted without being forced by injuries but he did. I just hope he doesn't try some crazy experiment, as ramsej said, because that crossed my mind as well.

I have a facebook friend who makes a prediction every day and so far hasn't gotten one right (not just about winners but about who will advance further or make it to the final etc.). He just posted that Italy will beat Germany. I believe that his curse is stronger than the Italian one. :coffee:

This will be the test of the year for all the players. Probably last games formation will be used cause it is probably best. If this is it?

I as a coach would try to ruffle Chellini´s feathers because he is quite the dirty player /also very good) and an early yellow would slow him down.

Practice a special set piece.
100% aggression when we lose the ball
we win 2-0
Statistics are like miniskirts . What they reveal is tantalizing, but what they hide is crucial.
