Sven Bender barely played in the last part of the season for Dortmund, he was coming out of a long term injury. It makes sense. But keeping Merte? Good Lord.

I'm losing a little bit of my optimism heading into the tournament. Our defense does look shaky (damm you Mertesacker), like Van Basten just remarked, and I'm not trusting Loew as much as I used to. I mentioned in the Israel game thread that, because our emphasis on possession football, it made more sense tactically to play with wingers that can naturally cut inside and shoot (e.g. Shuerrle playing on the left instead of Podolski) and fullbacks playing on their natural side so they can overlap and cross (e.g. Lahm on the righ, Schmelzer on the left). Mr Loew seems to have a different idea. Not that I'm a qualified tactician or so, and Loew has been the best NT coach in years, so we'll see what happens.

To be honest this change was much more stupid than not playing the right players. Why would he want to change with a system that is proven to work? Germany might not have won an international title under Loew but IMO they were easily the best team in South Africa two years ago.

Agree. I am Germany NT fan from '82 and really it's the first time after all these years that I've heard from a lot of people of how great football we played during WC2010.

It was really just fitting the style to that of a football heavy weight. Germany were dark horses in 2010, so it was visible that they were gonna be a defensive team most of the time. Now the team is considered one of the best teams in the world, and it doesn't have the same surprise factor as in 2010. We just can't play counter attacking football anymore because teams are too afraid of us to attack now.

Yeah, and also teams don't have the tactical naivety of England and Argentina (not saying they were bad... well, England were).

I noticed that our next game will be against Portugal in the Euro. I thought there was still a friendly left

Nope, we're getting some rest. France, for example, has a game of Wednesday, IN France in fact. Germany can recharge their batteries instead.
