Mertesacker retiring from the NT, he has lost his first team spot though, Boa and Hummels ahead of him now anyways.

I did see it coming, clearly. Even though he is only 29, it Always looks like he is way older when he plays and on top of that he lost his spot while playing @ the WC to Hummels/Boateng anyway. I Always had my doubts with him, because he wasnt the most secure defender Germany had and his speed is not really a pro. Good for Boateng this, now he has his CB spot next to Hummels.

In two years' time there will hopefully be Badstuber as well. :) Danke für alles Per, even though your performances used to annoy me.

Who's left from that bunch, Schweinstiger and Podolski? Merta rather retire than sit on the bench. In 2 years they'll be other CBs that will probably picked ahead of him. Ginter, Mustafi, Höwedes, then there's Badstuber.

Mertesacker would have been a world class CB if only he had pace.

The NT has lost a lot of experience with the retirements of Lahm and BFG.

At the same time it's good and bad decision. But yeah... 10 years NT career, amazing 104 caps even though it could have been more in the last 4 years(since Badstuber, Hummels and Boateng showed up on football stage). It's gonna be weird without Per despite there are other solutions who look far better against top opponents, but his professionalism, loyalty, pride and commitment to Elf were essential in the tough times(2004-2010) for German football.

Merte shall be well remembered for everything he did. =D>

Decision looks great for Höwedes, Ginter, Marvin Friedrich and other CB youngsters.

In other news, insurance premiums on players took a sudden dive. No news yet on the reasons for this unexpected surprise.

With all due respect to his achievements and dedication, he was having an awful NT run for as long as I can remember. For a while now Loew had stronger and yet faster alternatives (Boateng ie), smaller and yet better jumpers (Hummels anyone?) just to point out his more obvious flaws. Ok fine, I'm being king prick today.

City would be coming up in a few days. I hope they don't play 180 minutes.
