[2008-10-15] France U21 vs Germany U21

Germany's under-21 side will play in the European Championships next summer after edging France's Bleuets 2-1 on aggregate. A goal from Benedikt Höwedes in the very last minute of play steered the Germans towards the finals in Sweden.

In front of a home crowd that was clearly eager to see their side to well, the young Frenchmen started impressively and on two occasions in the first ten minutes could have been ahead. Loïc Rémy had the better of the chances, searing onto a lovely through ball by Kaboul, who would, short afterwards, go off injured, but shooting wide with his instep when presented with a chance.

Two minutes later, Roma’s Jérémy Menez was denied by a solid block from Neuer in the visiting goal.

Les Bleuets would largely control the first half but lacked the incision to carve open as clear-cut a chance as they had done in the opening stages. Ten minutes before the break, the hosts would come as close as they had during the first period. A Mounier corner dropped to the feet of Benalouane, whose first time volley clattered off the visiting crossbar.

Germany, who had posed little as an attacking threat in the first half save a dangerous effort from Dejagah, started the more positively of the two sides in the second half but, like their French counterparts in the first half, were largely impotent in front of goal. Dejagah would again be the main danger man but his fierce drive was comfortably dealt with by Lloris, who sat on the bench for the full French team at the weekend.

France would wrestle much of the ball from their hosts but there were still few chances to get the hosts particularly excited. With 13 minutes remaining, they had virtual match point when substitute Nimani and Danzé played a neat one-two but the Rennes’ untility man crushed efforts against the goalkeeper not once but twice.

Les Bleuets would rue these misses as they were severely punished in the final minute of the match. Castro played a fine pass to Benedikt Höwedes, who wasted no time in pushing the ball past Lloris and into the bottom of the net.

Four minutes of stoppage time was not time enough for France to mount a Lazarus-like comeback; Höwedes goal 40 seconds from the end of regular time enough to send them out.
