Hertha BSC Berlin

Postby Tedesco » Sat Feb 01, 2014 1:39 am

KKR invests in German soccer club Hertha BSC -source [source]

Jan 31 (Reuters) - Buyout group KKR has struck a deal to take a roughly 10 percent stake in Berlin's top soccer club Hertha BSC, a source familiar with the transaction said on Friday.

KKR will invest around 60 million euros ($81.38 million) in total plus take steps to strengthen Hertha's finances and to buy back some marketing and catering rights that the club sold to plug holes in its balance sheet, the source said.

KKR will not try to influence sport-related issues such as engaging players, the source added.

"The purpose of the deal is to professionalise Hertha BSC's business and catch up with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund ", the source said.

KKR declined to comment.

A spokesman for Hertha BSC, which ranks seventh in Germany's premier league, also declined to comment.

This is a quite interesting piece.

Is this the beginning of foreign investment in the BuLi?

I believe you couldn't be more wrong.

There's a reason DFB has insisted on 50+1 rule and not 100% rule. They are aware of the practical needs of a club. There is nothing wrong with 3rd party investment in a club. And so the 50+1 rule keeps the club of having the upper hand, if or when they have to deal with investors 'unjust' demands. So the decision to take the club forward in any direction still rests with the club. They are under no pressure and they shouldn't ever be if they exercise the upper hand properly.
Also, the reason 'crazy' billionaires don't come to buy a Buli club is because if they want full control of the club with the money invested, they can never have it and I'm not sure how many billionaires would agree to such a 'weak' board seat even with 49% investment.

PS: Probably the reason companies buy stocks as it promotes them too. Audi,Adida, KKR, Bayer, VW. I think we have only group investments except for Hoppenheim.

Bayern have similarly sold shares to Audi and Adidas in return for a nice lump sum of money.

To be honest, if I was an investor I would target a league with no 50+1 rule. I see this as more of an exception rather than the start of something new.

That depends on which type of investment you are doing I guess:
1. Toy club: Buy the club and whatever you want with it;
2. Marketing: Like Bayern, buy shares to promote your own brand with sponsorship agreements.

What I find interesting is that this is a foreign investor.

Well, I think the main idea for KKR is that Hertha is the capital's club.

About damn time Berlin takes itself seriously. Logically they should have a huge base being based in the capital.

A sugar daddy type investor can gain control of a BuLi club if he owns 49% of the shares for a long period of time, i think its 20 years or something. Almost like a safe guard against bad investors who would ditch the project and leave a club in ruin...

Well, only being capital doesn't matter, Berlin is very poor compared to Munich.

But about having a good base, that's spot on.

Exactly, I don't really think it's any different from what we did. Certainly nothing similar to what happens in other countries.

This. The Bundesliga must be the only strong league in Europe without a strong capital-based team.

Is that the Stocker who scored against us in the CL? He used to be a great player. I think he is playing against Ecuador and France this WC.

Yup the same one from Basel.

On another irrelevant note, Murat Yakice in has decided to part with Basel. Their coach; the guy nemesis of Chelsea.

Stocker will do well for them. Also with a cash infusion, Hertha could be a real competitor next season.
