8) actually

Hummels - Boateng (as per whoscored.com)

Assists: 1 - 3
Key passes per game: 0.3 - 0.6
Average passes: 79.7 - 68
Passing accuracy: 86.1 - 87.6
Long balls per game: 4.5 - 6.9
Times disposessed per game: 0.2 - 0.1
Bad ball control per game: 0.6 - 0.2

Looks to me like Boateng is head and shoulders above Hummels when it comes to playmaking.

Hmm

What I like about Hummels is that he looks really confident on the ball, and has more 'presence' than Boateng. If his teammates agree with me, then he would be more inspirational and a calming factor to his teammates.

I guess, though it's that unquantifiable quality. I certainly didn't feel calm or confident when he was in the German NT defence, but judging anyone on the basis of being in Jogi Löw's defensive line is quite unfair. :P

What you don't take under consideration is that Hummels has a striker pressing him in almost every game while Bayern play against teams that sit deep so Boateng usually has more time to make a decision. They are both very good with the ball but I think Hummels is a bit more creative with his plays and he tries more risky passes, through balls etc. From what I remember Boateng prefers to play long balls to the wings.

NT is a whole different matter, it all depends on what team you play, in Dortmund everybody knows that if Hummels has the ball somebody should make a run behind the defence etc. In Germany Hummels isn't the that important when it comes to playmaking, Jogi prefers midfielders to do the job.

Talking about defenders, defender gets injured... the jinx is on them now. Successfully transfered jinx to Borusse. We should keep this talk going... :P

I... I just showed how statistics suggest that he is not. Besides, it's quite ridiculous to suggest that teams don't press against Bayern anymore and teams don't sit back against Dortmund, while this season has proven that the exact opposites are best fits for dealing with the respective teams.

Which statistic suggests that Boateng is more creative and tries more risky passes? The "key passes" one? What is the definition of a key pass here? I presume it's something like "a pass after which there was a shot on goal" or whatever. All that stat says is that after Boateng's pass there was a shot on goal more often. It doesn't say anything about the pass being creative/risky.

And the second argument -> Hummels is man marked by a striker week-in, week-out. Sokratis always has space, Mats hardly ever does. Bayern have so many threats in attack that I highly doubt Boateng is man marked. Is he? I don't know, I watched only 3 or 4 Bayern games this season.

Hummels hasn't been better than Boa for the last two seasons, but since January he has been playing at an absolutely otherworldly level. He seems to be incapable of making a mistake.

The one thing about his ability as a playmaker is that he can definitely get in the middle of the pitch and operate as midfielder at times and be quite good at it. This might be due to coaching preferences but he has really excelled at it this season.

p.s Dortmund continues to have an absolutely amazing season. It seems kind of unfair for either team to not win the title playing at such a high level.

They are probably the only unbeaten team left in 2016.
