Bayern's Chief Rival in German Football

Postby America USA » Wed Jul 19, 2017 10:20 pm

Who do you guys think is Bayern's Number One rival in Germany?

I think at present it is Dortmund. In the past it was teams like Monchengladbach and Hamburger. Then there are local rivalries against the likes of 1860 and Nuremberg.

I'd say Dortmund are our closest rivals and have been for about a decade now.

What do you guys think? Don't forget to mention in the replies who you voted for!

It has always been 1860, end of story.

As far as current Bundesliga teams go, I think at the moment it is definitely Dortmund and this will probably get bigger as time goes by, especially if Dortmund keep challenging for titles. Der Klassiker is being marketed well and draws in huge audiences internationally. Thus the rivalry has something which previous ones lacked and is more likely to survive in the long term.

Before Dortmund it was probably Bremen and Schalke in the 2000s.

Going by statistics, our traditional bogey team is Offenbach. I think they're probably the only German club who have scored more goals against us than conceded. And, while we haven't crossed swords with them recently, we've played 40 matches against them in total, scoring 71 and conceding 77.

As for pure rivalry, this is an easy answer. It's obviously Dortmund. Especially after 2012-13. 1860 have the potential to be a bigger rival if they were competitive, but they're mostly irrelevant for years.

I didn't expect the poll to be so one sided! Also, 1860 have the potential to be Bayern's main rivals but they are not coming back in the BL any time soon. Also there's the possibility that 1860 could dissolve in the next decade or so if things get worse for them...

I think Leipzig will suffer this season with CL football. Dortmund remains the main threat.
