Bayern's approach

Bayern Munich’s youth program has produced current German national team stars Philipp Lahm, Thomas Mueller and Bastian Schweinsteiger. The 40 top players that came out of its academy in the last 12 years have a total market value of $320 million.

In an interview with Kicker Magazine, Bayern’s youth director Werner Kern shared some insights into the program:

“The joke is that there used to be more talent than today. They used to grow on trees, because it was common to play pickup soccer after school. But the clubs didn’t have the infrastructure or the scouts. The boys from the small towns had no chance to land at the big clubs.”

Bayern’s youth players attend school from 8 am to 4 pm and Bayern employs six school teachers to oversee the residency hall. “The players who master school and soccer become mentally strong,” says Kern.

Bayern invites players into residency at 15. Taking players younger than that out of their parents’ homes is detrimental, says Kern. Before age 15, only players who can reach the club with the Munich subway play in Bayern's youth teams.

“Traveling 100 kilometers (60 miles) to practice is crazy,” says Kern.

Bajaj Allianz to select teenagers for football camp in Germany

Bajaj Allianz has launched the selection process for Allianz Junior Football camp in India to select teenagers for a camp in Germany. Allianz, the official partner of FC Bayern Muncih is hosting its third international football camp in Munich, Germany in August 2011.

Addressing a press conference, Manmesh Kalanagutkar, Divisional Manager, Bajaj Allianz said the camp will provide 50 teenagers from across the world in the age group of 14-16 a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to practice with the FC Bayern Munich coaches on club's official training ground, attend a match at Allianz Arena, the unique football stadium and meet football stars from FC Bayern Munich. Through the activity, Allianz aims at providing a platform for youngsters to fulfil their aspirations of becoming a football player by exposing them to professional training with the best players in the country and the world.

This year, Bajaj Allianz will be selecting four teenagers from over 41 cities including Goa where 25 schools have been targeted. Last year Quan Gomes from Goa was amongst the six talented youngsters to be part of the Allianz Junior Football camp in Munich.

With more countries participating this year, India will see only four participants in the camp.

FC Bayern are having their first training session.

Philipp Lahm, Thomas Mueller and Mario Gomez and newcomer Manuel Neuer got longer holidays and will start training on Friday.

Contento was the first one to arrive, followed by Butt, Gustavo, Rafinha, Sattelmaier, Petersen and Schweinsteiger.

Them too. Only Contento, Butt, Gustavo, Rafinha, Sattelmaier, Petersen, Schweinsteiger and 6 non-professionals were available for training.

Yes, Brazilians do tend to arrive late. But of course that's generalisation.
