What was the formation? 4-2-3-1 with Muller on the right, James in the hole? Was there a lot of fluidity between the two?

James was more on the right but they switched a lot.

More than Gomez at the present time or more than Gomez used to score for us? If the latter was possible, then we can sell him for 345m.

We announced him as a player who can score a lot of goals, so yes his finishing performance is something worthy of scrutiny, especially since, as I wrote earlier, it's been ages since we've had an AMC who scored goals regularly. It gives us a different dimension if we can start scoring (regularly) through the middle through players who aren't Lewandowski or Mueller.

Every player has his phases once in a while when his finishing isn't as good or he is unlucky.
Just tell that to Müller...

But I know you don't like James and don't even consider him our player, so discussing with you will probably be useless anyways.

I don't like the idea of trying to be better than a team by loaning their bench players for your starting XI. Having said that, last time I complained about this very thing (albeit it being a purchase rather than a loan), it was when we got Boateng, and how well that turned out for us! In any case, I prefer to sign starters because you're weakening your opponent at the same time (unless they end up getting a better replacement), kind of like we do with Dortmund

Like it makes a difference from what team he's coming or if it was a loan if he improves our team...
Also that loan thing is an excellent deal on our part. Can't really lose out on it.

Also James has missed like 2 chances in all the pre-season from which he definatly should have scored. The other "chances" where he got off a shot/header were either in suboptimal positions or in positions where he did very well to actually get the chance in the first place.

You do know that bench players at top clubs have included players like Super Mario El Torero Gomez in the past right?

Yes, it makes a difference from what team he's coming from. In an ideal world, a transfer serves not only to strengthen your team but to weaken your direct opponent, and Real Madrid is to be seen as our biggest competitor in the Champions League.

As for the loan, you really need to see the fine print on that loan contract to see whether or not it's excellent. Specifically, does the player have the right to refuse a Bayern offer? It would be weird if he performs really well and near the end of the loan when Bayern try to trigger the clause he simply says "no" and lands back in Madrid a month later, especially if they motivate him with promises of consistent playing time.

This is why I'm wary about calling him our player until I know for sure that a simple shake of the head could land him in another club in 2 years time without even needing to hold a pen in his hand. I mean you can use this argument against any player on contract, but at least they have to do more effort, like finding a new club and agreeing on a contract etc. With a loan that gives a player right of refusal it's different because inaction from his end (i.e. not signing a contract offered by Bayern) automatically lands him at Real Madrid in 2 years time with the same salary he was on and with just one year left on his contract which gives him negotiating powers for an improved salary.

giving Tolisso a 6 is inexplicable, especially since they gave Sanches a 7.

6 is a bit harsh on Tolisso but honestly Sanches was a 7 at worst. Great performance from him today.

They don't want to hype up our signing, do they?
also:
N'Golo Kante 5: Given a rare chasing by Renato Sanches in midfield.

Really? Not gonna mention Tolisso there?
