He said it's a mentality thing and that the BuLi goalkeepers are very tall. We lost the last four now. Why is mentality a problem in a friendly against Gladbach? Or against the Chinese champions? There isn't any pressure in those games. The routine is lacking if it's never or seldom practised, and that doesn't help in situations when there's pressure. I might be wrong but I have the feeling that Neuer also used to better at saving penalties two or three years ago. He was in the wrong corner yesterday 4/5 times.

It looked like he guessed a bit early every time. Probably lack of practise.

Agreed. He doesn't seem to have the same mojo there. I remember the 2011/12 CL and Pokal semi finals where he had such a presence, like the other team knew he would save one. Now he seems almost meek.

Milan has been impressive so far this pre-season. This would be a good test for our players. I hope Pep gives some playing times to your youngsters, Martinez, and Gotze.

We've lost all 4 penalty shootouts since 28th April (against Dortmund). That's four penalty shootouts in the last 95 calendar days. We really should be doing something about it.

Naturally Pep is right, it is a mentality thing. But it is not only a mentality thing, you need routine too. IMHO, the lack of it clearly shows on both field players' and goalkeepers' performances. :?

But will Pep think good old-fashioned mundane penalty practise is needed?

Not only that, but penalty practice (or lack thereof) directly affects mentality. If you know you haven't taken a penalty in ages, you can't expect to be too confident about taking one.

I don't expect us to beat Real if we meet them in the final, but not even making the final of our own tournament would sum up the last few months, even if it is only a made up friendly tournament for sponsorship purposes

You can not magically not feel under pressure though...you can however practice something to the extent that it basically doesn't really matter how much pressure you are under, you'll still be able to perform. This is literally professional sports 101...this is what all sportsmen do especially in sports like golf, poker, snooker...I don't see why this practice should be any different in football. I'm more surprised than anything about this approach.

Practicing penalties is for losers. Akin to writing your concession speech even before the match begins.

While penalties do involve a bit of luck there are certain variables that can be put to your advantage if you practice them such as dealing with the pressure. Just like someone who rarely does speeches and is nervous in front of crowds. By practicing the speech enough times they will not suddenly turn into a motivational speaker but they will do better than had they not practice.
