Slovakian football

Slovakian football league is called Fortuna liga (Fortuna league). Fortuna is sport bet company.
Our top league started amongst with Slovakian independent in 1993.

List of slovakian champions (from 1993 - 2014) :
ŠK Slovan Bratislava (8 times)
MŠK Žilina (6 times)
MFK Košice (2 times)
Inter Bratislava (2 times)
Artmedia Petržalka (2 times)
MFK Ružomberok (1 time)

League now consists from 12 teams, has 33 rounds so you play 3 times with other teams. If you were previous year from 1st to 6th place you will play 17 times Home. If you were from 7th to 11th place you will play 16 times Home. I think it's called danish or norgewian system but I'm not sure.
12th team is relegate to lower league called 2. liga (Second league).

Stadiums:
This is (together with low attendance) the biggest problem of slovakian football. Most of stadiums are devastated and old. We don't have big and representative national stadium for our National football team. The old national stadium Tehelné pole (Brickfield) is collapsed and there is no new Tehelné pole in past few years. National team plays on Pasienky, which is stadium of Slovan Bratislava, originally Inter Bratislava. Meantime, Inter perished and owner of Pasienky is Slovan. So sad.
Other stadiums are in various conditions. According to me, the best stadium has MŠK Žilina and in 2015 there will be a brand new Anton Malatinský stadium for Spartak Trnava. Little clubs like Spartak Myjava, FK Senica and Vion Zlaté Moravce have their small but new stadiums. Bigger clubs like MFK Košice, Dukla Banská Bystrica and DAC Dunajská Streda have old, dirty and devastated stadiums.
The most discusions are around ŠK Slovan's new stadium. The problem is that Slovan's owner is big businessman and still wait to financial help from state. Won't spend any own Euros without state help. Ridiculous. So, it means whole Slovakia is laughing to Slovan, called they Hobos or Homeless.
But tbh, there is big state help for other teams. State provide money to clubs to improve, build and renew their stadiums. So there are plans to new stadiums in Dunajská Streda, Trenčín, Banská Bystrica and Košice but who knows. :)

Football derbies:
The biggest slovakian derby is Slovan Bratislava - Spartak Trnava. Old rivalry from old czechoslovakian league, from late 60's.
We have Východoslovenské derby (East Slovakian derby) between FC Tatran Prešov (now in 2nd league) and MFK Košice.
The former big derby was Velké bratislavké derby (Big Bratislava derby) between Slovan Bratislava and Inter Bratislava (perished and again refound, play in 4th league) and Malé bratislavské derby (Small Bratislava derby) between Slovan - Inter, Slovan - Artmedia Petržalka, Inter - Artmedia. Artmedia is another club which perished (2012), they don't have own stadium and played lower Bratislava's football league.

We got local derbies too. For example:
FK Senica - Spartak Myjava (distance between clubs is about 20 km)
MFK Ružomberok - MŠK Žilina
Spartak Trnava - FC Nitra (is in 2nd league)
Dukla Banská Bystrica - MŠK Žilina (Mid Slovakian derby)

Supporters:
Almost every team has its own ultras group (except Zlaté Moravce and Podbrezová). The biggest ultras group is Bilí Andelé (White angels) or Red Black Warrios in Spartak Trnava. Big group has Slovan Bratislava, called Belasá Šlachta (Blue nobility). In past, MŠK Žilina had its own big ultras group called Šosóni (Shoshone tribe in USA) but now they are boycotting their matches because of their board.
Solid group has MFK Ružomberok (Concordia 1906), MFK Košice (Ultras Košice), Dukla Banská Bystrica (Red white angels) and AS Trenčín (Ultras AS Trenčín).
Small but active groups are Železná Únia (Iron Union) - FK Senica and Ultras Spartak Myjava.
Separate case is ultras group of DAC Dunajská Streda. This is club of hungarian minority and relations between slovak majority and hungarian minority aren't always so good. But the fact is, DAC fans regulary come to matches in big numbers, provoke other slovakian ultras groups with hungarian flags, hungarian chanting etc. They are bunch of chauvinists and hungarian nacionalists. They are supported from Ferencvaros Budapest fans from Hungary.

my team in Malta - Birkirkara FC played its ever UEFA comp match against Trnava in 1997. We lost 1-0 here and 3-1 away. Than in 2010 we played Zilina in 2nd qual round of the CH league. We won 1-0 in Malta but lost 3-0 away if I remember correctly.

@ Burko ; Do you support Trnava ? Has Jean Paul Farrugia started training with the team? I think he signed on loan right?

Before independent Slovakia there was communist Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovak football was well known and quiet successful in Europe.
The biggest succesess of czechoslovakian national team were: 2nd place in WC in Chile (key players were Slovaks) 1962, 2nd place in WC in Italy 1934 and EURO winner in 1976 (8 players from starting XI were Slovaks).
The biggest club success in Europe was in 1969, European Cup Winners' Cup Final, when ŠK Slovan Bratislava defeated FC Barcelona 3:2.
Another european success was Spartak Trnava's semifinal in European champions cup in 1969(todays Champions league). In semifinal they lost in Amsterdam 3:0 and in Trnava, Spartak decisive defeated Ajax 2:0. Sadly, Spartak was eliminated.

Czechoslovakian football league was created in 1946 and finished in 1993. In that period the most famous and successful team were:
AC Sparta Prague (14 times champion)
Dukla Prague (11 times champion)
Slovan Bratislava (7 times champion)
Spartak Trnava (5 times champion from 1967/68 to 1972/73!!!)
Baník Ostrava (3 times champion)

The biggest slovak stars in czechoslovak era: (You maybe know them)
Jozef Adamec, Anton Ondruš, Marián Masný, Karol Dobiáš, Ján Popluhár, Ján Kozák (slovak national team coach), Peter Dubovský, Ján Čapkovič, Jozef Čapkovič, Alexander Vencel, Alexander Horváth, Jozef Móder, Ladislav Jurkemik, Karol Jokl, Ján Švehlík, Andrej Kvašňák and for sure Jozef Vengloš.

No, I'm fan of FK Senica, my hometown. Before our promotion to top league I supported ŠK Slovan :D
And answer to your question: I dont know.
Yesterday Spartak've played in European league qualification and Farrugia didn't participate. But I can ask friend of mine who is Spartak's fan.

One negative record od Slovakian football team:
MŠK Žilina lost its home game against Olympique Marseille 0:7 (2010/11) and created new negative record - the biggest home lose in history of CL. :D

Finally. I am looking forward to see him in action. 8)

BTW, UEFA didn't not allow Slovan to play their European league's matches against Napoli SSC, Young Boys Bern and Sparta Prague (czechoslovakian derby) on Pasienky because of its technical conditions.
So there are few solutions: UEFA exception and around 200 thousand € to reconstruction Pasienky or play games in hungarian Györ, Vienna or Žilina.
Big, big shame for Slovan and Slovakian football.
