UEFA Coefficient Rankings

Postby Firefox1234 » Thu Feb 27, 2014 9:35 pm

With all the talk about which is the better league kinda surprising their isn't a coefficient table on this forum. This is thread will have the updated table from the UEFA's official site of coefficient rankings.

These rankings will be updated after each round of UEFA club competition matches

How it works:
The club coefficient rankings are based on the results of clubs competing in the five previous seasons of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. The rankings determine the seeding of each club in all UEFA competition draws.
UEFA Champions League points system
First qualifying round elimination – 0.5 points
Second qualifying round elimination – 1 point
Group stage participation – 4 points
Group stage win – 2 points
Group stage draw – 1 point
Round of 16 participation – 4 points
Since 2009/10 clubs have been awarded an additional point if they reach the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals or final.
NB Points are not awarded for elimination in the third qualifying round or play-offs, since those clubs move to the UEFA Europa League and are awarded points for participation in that competition.
UEFA Europa League points system
First qualifying round elimination – 0.25 points
Second qualifying round elimination – 0.5 points
Third qualifying round elimination – 1 point
Play-off elimination – 1.5 points
Group stage win – 2 points
Group stage draw – 1 point
Since 2009/10, clubs have been guaranteed a minimum of two points if they reach the group stage and are awarded an additional point if they get to the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final.
*Penalty shoot-outs do not affect the calculation system.
Coefficient calculation
Clubs' coefficients are determined by the sum of all points won in the previous five years, plus 20% of the association coefficient over the same period (33% before 2009).

Beautiful! Portugal's getting ever so closer to the Serie A starting off next season (i.e. when the 09/10 coefficients are removed).

If the season was to end now, next season the coefficients would start:

Spain 75.356
England 66.106
Germany 62.701
Italy 50.510
Portugal 50.299

France 41.166

Just 0.211 points difference :) With 1 Italian team and 2 Portuguese teams left, it could become a real possibility that Portugal overtakes Italy, at least until the start of next season. Every win will earn them 0.333, every draw will earn them 0.167 while progression to the next stage of competition a further 0.167 points. How embarrassing would that be for the Serie A if Portugal overtakes them?

That is correct. If two teams play in a knockout, 1st leg team A wins 2-0 and 2nd leg team B wins 2-0, match goes to extra time and nobody scores, and team A wins on penalties, both teams would get an equal amount of coefficient points from wins/draws, however team A would also get the bonus points associated with progressing to the next round.

I guess it won't be that embarrassing. The qualification quota remains the same. :)

Look at the gap between the EPL and BuLi... Wasn't it closer a couple of months ago?

by very few points...

Yes at one point it was possible to overtake them soon, but now they have 2 more points than the Bundesliga for this season, and we'll be losing a season better than theirs next year.

There is a decent chance that both Man United and Chelsea go out while Bayern advance further though.

I don't think the BuLi will overtake the EPL this season but next season things look a lot brighter especially if Arsenal fail to qualify for the UCL cause of Everton and Liverpool get in also. Both those teams would have a slim chance of progressing past the groups since they have a low coefficinet rating.

Gladbach/Wolfsburg/Leverkusen will probably also do a much better job in the Europa League next year than Freiburg and Stuttgart did this year.
