?!?!

Either I didn't understand you or this is absolute bollocks. The more teams they have in it, the more points they are likely to get and the higher the coefficient will go.

You didn't quote me fully. I finished by saying you can also make the other's win marginally lower. Don't points obtained in wins and draws get divided by teams in the competition?

Yes, points are divided by number of teams which entered the competition. So eg. Germany points are divided by 7 even if 4 clubs left in competition, at the final stage points of 1 team are divided by 7. As it stands for today Italy got 13.833 points for their coefficient in comparison with Germany 13.571 and England 12.87, partly thanks to the number of teams still in play.

^ This. There were 6 Italian clubs (and 7 German clubs) that made it at least to the qualifiers of CL/EL. Every point that any Italian club gets, now and until the end of both competitions, is divided by 6 no matter how many teams are left in it.

For Germany, the points are divided by 7, even though 2 got eliminated already.

Italy got some tough draws in EL.
Inter against wolfsburg
Torino against zenit
Napoli against dinamo moscow

Three of the toughest possible teams along with everton. Roma is playing fiorentina which means there might just be one or two italian teams left next round.

Re: UEFA Coefficient Rankings

Postby tflags » Mon Mar 02, 2015 11:23 am

Fine, UEFA's description of the calculation didn't exactly distinguish between qualified and remaining teams.

From UEFA.com: Coefficient calculation
"The coefficient is calculated by working out an average score: dividing the number of points obtained, by the total number of clubs representing an association in that season’s two club competitions. The resulting figure is then tallied with the results of the previous four seasons to calculate the coefficient. Where two associations have the same coefficient, the association with the higher coefficient in the most recent season is placed first.
These rankings will be updated after each round of UEFA club competition matches."

"Representing" is present. If you are doing the calculation in April, hardly anyone would think you should count with, I don't know, Arsenal for example, as one of the dividers.

The key is: "...representing an association in that season’s two club competitions"

No it isn't. If you do a United halfway through the group stages, you are not representing anyone but shame at the knockout stages, aren't you?

I understand you, you discuss fairness of the system and we just point to mechanics of it as it stands now. Of course as with all rankings they are not perfect, like this particular one.

If you look at your source season 10/11 won't be counted in anymore and this was bad year for Germany (2.691 pts behind England) so the're not at safe distance, they're behind already.

yes.

only when the 12/13 season wont be counted in anymore england will be 1.071 points ahead again.
that's the deficit germany has to catch up, starting tomorrow with a win for fc bayern münchen, to save 2nd place for more years.

monaco can kick out arsenal with a solid performance. and if paris can pull off a very good game...

Schalke's win yesterday is a positive for our coefficients, despite them being eliminated. Correct?

yes, 2 points for the win. madrid only got 1 bonus point.

points so far:

Schalke
4 1 1 2 0 0 2 5 0 2 = 17

Leverkusen
1 1 4 0 2 2 2 0 1 5 2 = 20

Dortmund
4 2 2 2 2 0 1 5 0 = 18

München
4 2 2 2 2 0 2 5 1 = 20

Wolfsburg
0 1 2 2 0 2 2 1 = 10

Gladbach
1 1 1 1 2 2 1 2 0 0 = 11

Mainz
1 0 = 1

leverkusen lost 2 games in the group stage but got 1 point for each win in the qualification games and therefore scored as many points as bayern münchen did so far.

bonus points in green.

Now we need Barca to finish Man C and hopefully BvB can come out of Turin with a win.
