Bayern Munich vs Olympique de Marseille

Bayern Munich vs Olympique de Marseille
Competition: Champions League
Venue: Allianz Arena, Munich

After winning the first leg 0-2 in France, FC Bayern will play the second leg knowing that a semifinal against Real Madrid is almost definitely looming if they manage to progress.

Missing the services of the suspended Bastian Schweinsteiger, FC Bayern have four players who are one yellow card away from a one-match suspension:
  • Luiz Gustavo
  • Thomas Müller
  • Toni Kroos
  • Jérôme Boateng

We better hope DvB returns quickly, cause we're very thin at the back, Müller should have also tried to get a yellow so he can be fresh for a potential Madrid tie.

The referee for the match has not yet been announced, but it will almost definitely be someone else.

I think Boateng should be benched for this one. We have a comfortable lead and should not be put under much pressure at Allianz Arena. It is too risky for us if he gets a yellow card, especially since one of his trademark hard tackles might lead to it.

We also maintain a moderate tempo for this game as we are in no rush to attack and score goals. The next couple of weeks wil determine our season, so if we are able to get a goal by HT, it wouldn't be a bad idea to rest some key players, especially Lahm, Robben, and Gomez (who certainly looks like needing a rest as per yesterday's performance).

Can someone please clarify the yellow card issue? Are yellow cards removed for the semi-finals or are the cards there until the final?

The cards are removed at no point. See below, particularly 22.03

Article 22

Yellow and red cards

22.01 As a rule, a player who is sent off the field of play is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. For serious offences the punishment can be extended to all UEFA competition categories.

22.02 In case of repeated cautions:

a) before the group stage, a player is suspended for the next competition match after two cautions in two different matches, as well as after the fourth and sixth caution;

b) from the first match in the group stage, a player is suspended for the next competition match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).

22.03 Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season.

22.04 Exceptionally, single cautions and pending yellow-card suspensions expire on completion of the play-offs. They are not carried forward to the group stage.

22.05 Cautions and pending yellow-card suspensions from club competition matches expire at the end of the season

so its very likley that someone will get 3rd yellow card so i think that we should take some risks. Muller or Gustavo should get 3rd yellow against OM becouse i think that they are most important players for finals. One of them wont be able to play 1st match vs Real but its home match so we could manage this problem. So if Miller gets yellow Kross can be CAM and same if Kross gets yellow against real. If Gustavo gets yellow Kross can cover for him and later Gustavo could play as CDM or CB if Boa gets 3rd yellow. May be we should play Tymo as CB against OM and rest Boa.
But Lahm simply cant allow himself to get another yellow card in any match becouse he is irreplaceable ( rafinha isnt good enough for Real and later finals).

Didier Deschamps was part of the Juventus team that lost the 1998 Champions League final to Jupp Heynckes' Real Madrid.

Bayern munich committed 140 fouls in this season's edition of the Champions League; the most of any other team in the quarter-finals.

Jerome Boateng
Luiz Gustavo
Toni Kroos
Thomas Muller

are one yellow away from suspension and Real Madrid has none

I thought Marcelo was one yellow card away from suspension, but goal.com are correct: after further investigation I found out that Marcelo's two yellow cards were both in the same match, meaning he was sent off and suspended for the following match. So it is true: unless a player of theirs gets sent off against APOEL (highly unlikely), none of their players will be suspended, at least for the first leg.
