[2011-08-17] Bayern Munich vs FC Zürich

Postby MUTU » Mon Aug 15, 2011 1:27 pm

It is embarassing for a club the stature of FC Bayern to be playing in the Champions League qualifiers. Nevertheless, following the 3rd place finish in last season's Bundesliga, FC Bayern were matched up against injury-hit FC Zürich, who are fresh from scoring two stoppage time goals against Swiss champions FC Basel to turn a loss into a victory.

FC Bayern are firm favourites for this encounter, on paper at least. But given that the Swiss league has started quite a while ago will give FC Zürich an advantage in terms of match fitness.

Venue: Allianz Arena, München
Date: Wednesday, 17th August 2011, 20:45 CET

FC Bayern don't have any injury troubles, given that Robben is fit for the match.

Robben's fit and we're playing at home? Nothing less than a convincing victory is acceptable this time around. A domestic shock a la Gladbach can be remedied, but a play-off one can't.

I am expecting Zurich to play with 10 men behind the ball (a.k.a. parking the bus in front of their goal), and we've all seen how increasingly difficult it has been for us when opponents have done that.

PS: This match (and also the 2nd leg) will be broadcast live by free-to-air TV channel SAT1.

Of course, this should be a pretty routine win for us ... but you're right, Zurich will probably park the bus and that is EVEN if we managed to score a couple of goals as they want to play the return leg with the least harm ... so I don't expect a goal fest but at least a convincing victory / performance ...

Olic thinks that "Zurich is in good shape, but they are certainly not a top team"

He also predicts a 2-0 win. Perhaps we should add him to our predictions game?

Zürich's defense is nowhere near as good as Gladbach's, though. Keep in mind the form Gladbach had been in for half a year.

All respect to zurich but they are no better than Braunschweig. It should be one way traffic with a very comfortable victory

Got to expect a Bayern win by at least two goals, ideally 2-0, but really 3-0 or 4-0 should be the target. Need to prove to everyone (and more importantly themselves) that Bayern is still lethal in attack and should be feared by everyone.

Somewhere between the end of last season and this pre-season we have lost some spark. If someone goes wrong tomorrow, I dare not think what will be the reaction.

Hopefully we see Robben and Ribery on the wings, Mueller behind Gomez, Kroos behind Mueller and Basti in the deep holding role behind Kroos. Gustavo may have scored the winner on the weekend but that should change nothing IMHO.

I would be more happy with a clean sheet than a convincing victory, no away goals makes me more comfortable than 2-1 or 3-1

This game is another reason to play 2 strikers -- since we know they will play with most of their team behind the ball. We also shouldn't underestimate them especially in the last several minutes like Basel did. Sounds like we will play a mostly attacking formation anyway -- I hope we score as many as possible -- this tie can be over if we do a 4-0 or more, but I won't get over confident yet.

You always have to respect your opponent but I also wait win by a big margin. But I'm worried if:
a) Gomez don't score
b) we don't win by two goals at least

I think it's a good game to try different tactics. I like München Minded idea going with 2 strikers.

Heynckes said he will rotate the squad during season. This is his opportunity to start changing things or at least trying
