They made +10 from sales. They wasted 8 m euros on Nordtveit. or they can loan players. Even our Götze is much better player than Nordtveit. He could be a lot useful.

Hopp said in the interview I linked they have to generate transfer surpluses. What sane football executive aims at generating transfer surpluses ahead of their first CL season, and just having lost their two best players? To that man having the best tech laboratory in the Bundesliga is more important than having a successful football club.

The money is the last problem in this case.Even with limited money, they could do much better than Rupp and Nordtveit. Nagelsmann is a good coach on developing talents. Most of teams would gladly give their talents to them. France is nice market for teams like Hoffenheim. if Schalke can find a gem like Harit for 8 m euros, they could also find.

After all, they could eliminate Liverpool with 2 quality players instead 2 fodders. Now they lost a good money too.

Btw, l don't get why they have to generate transfer surpluses, since.

They are in Europe. so They will get a good money from overseas Bundesliga deal.
They will play more games thanks to Europe, so more match day and commercial revenue.
new Bundesliga tv deal. they will get more money.
More money from Europe League or CL.

I don't know how much you know about the background of this club so I'll point you to an article in English.

The bottom line is Hopp doesn't want this club to be too successful because he's afraid of fan hostility.

E: About Nordtveit. He was a solid defender in Gladbach and it was considered a big loss for them when he left. No idea why he totally fell apart at West Ham.

Ordering by bookmaker odds instead:

Pot 3: Liverpool, Tottenham, Napoli, Roma, Beşiktaş, Anderlecht, Basel, Olympiacos
Pot 4: RB Leipzig, Sporting CP, CSKA Moscow, Celtic, Feyenoord, APOEL, Qarabag, NK Maribor

The most difficult group for us, based on this would be Bayern, Barcelona, Liverpool, Sporting CP.
Another great group of death would be Real Madrid, PSG, Liverpool, RB Leipzig.

We will not get out of a tough group (like the one above) this year.

We've not strengthened the squad enough and though it's very early and sounds premature, but we aren't playing well and cohesively based on the first BL game. Preseason, if you can call it that, was a complete waste of time. Ancelloti has some major 'live' tuning to do and in my opinion, it won't be enough.

We need a relatively easy group this year.

No, we haven't IMPROVED enough, and that is on the coach. Our transfer activity was great other than the lack of Lewandowski backup. Our squad is stronger.

I have only one or two fears but I am not mentioning them before the draw!

Well, I disagree.
Ok, the total squad may have improved, I'll accept that, but as I've mentioned in another thread, I don't think the first choice XI has.

Tolliso adds a new dimension to midfield, but as much as he was maligned in this forum, and admittedly, I was never a big fan either, but we've lost the finesse and control Alonso brought, specially to big games.

I don't see Sule starting if Boateng+Hummels are fit.

As for James, again he is very good, but not an improvement for me over Ribery's or Muller's current level and Robben despite being close to retirement is a notch better than him. I don't think any XI we put out this year is going to be better than what we had against Real in the return leg last year.

We've added some depth (sadly not in the positions that need it the most), that's about it.
