The pots for next season are taking shape...
Potentially we can end up in a group made up by both Barca and Liverpool

Well it is the "Champions" League but I get your point, I kinda like it this way as it makes for some interesting group stage fixtures....

I want a very tough group for Bayern. I for one would welcome being with Barcelona or PSG in the group stage. It will help us put our Spanish boogie crap to bed and make up better prepared for the knockout stages. Barcelona are at their weakest right now, the midfield is aging and they rely too much on the front three to get the job done. PSG too are not at the same level as Real Madrid or Juventus.

Nothing to be worried about strong group or weak group it's all the same. All about Winning! scoring goals and keeping clean sheets.

Yeah. I mean, I get it. People want variety. But a situation in which one of Bayern, Liverpool and Barça are all in the same group and one fails to go through, while Shaktar does go through, is IMO terrible.

The Leicester thing was ridiculous. Some groups are extremely easy, while others are too hard. Unbalanced groups and a risk of losing top teams prematurely.

I am amongst one of those people who believes that the Champions League should be for League Champions only and the Europa League should be for the Domestic Cup Winners only. In case a team wins the double then there should be a play off between the second positioned team in the domestic league and the runners up of the domestic Cup to determine the EL spot.

Juventus won the domestic double, so to determine the EL spot for Italy there should be a play off match between Roma and Lazio. If it was like Bayern last year, where Dortmund was both second in the league and runners up in the Cup then that team would automatically qualify for EL.

That way we'll get rid of mediocrity from the European competitions. Only Winners or teams who do really well in their domestic football would earn a right to play in the CL and EL respectively. As of now allowing teams as low as sixth into European competitions is a farce! Also allowing one Champion team per nation would level the playing field for the smaller nations to compete with the bigger nations.

Playing for European competitions should be a privilege that must be earned. It has become a money making scam for the higher leagues in the past few years. Teams like Arsenal, Napoli, Tottenham and Wolfsburg are there only to make up numbers and help the stronger Associations get stronger. Real Madrid didn't deserve to be in the CL because of their abysmal domestic record in the past decade.

The only exception should be made for the defending CL/EL Champions if the said team fails to qualify for the European competitions by finishing poorly in their domestic football.

Doing so would make the competition in the domestic leagues and Cup even more fierce because only a win would make you eligible for the CL/EL. No more celebrating 4th/5th place as a trophy crap! This would kill mediocrity and complacency and all teams would give their 100% in every match. This would make for better viewing experience and make winning the priority. Only Champion teams like Bayern, Madrid(who finally won La Liga this year), Juventus, Benfica, Chelsea, Monaco and the like would fight it out to determine the undisputed champions of Europe.

But alas this is all wishful thinking and UEFA is too greedy to actually make this romance a reality.

That idea doesn't really work though, since it would be even easier for the top teams to win the CL. It reduces competition by nature of removing many top teams. Instead of 8-10 teams starting as potential winners, that would drop to 3-4.

^ the way I see it during the old format there were more chances of an upset. A good side from a smaller country can go all the way in that format. Also, Ajax in 95 comes to mind when they beat Bayern in the semi final and Milan in the final.

And if it's gotta be between 3-4 teams then that's exactly what is happening now. So it couldn't get any worse

maybe, but the spending disparity is too great nowadays, as is the quality of teams. Sure, you'd have some smaller teams make it into the knockout stages, but there is a small chance that domestic champions of a smaller league would progress against a Bayern, Juve, Barca/Real, etc.

Football has changed too much since then. Small teams from small leagues just can no longer actually compete with big teams from big leagues. A true upset once every 3-4 years is as much as you can expect nowadays.

^ UEFA killed the competition when it allowed the top four from the big nations to enter the tournament. I seriously think the name "Champions League " is a misnomer. Liverpool who have not won their Domestic league in 27 years and have failed to win the FA cup since 2006 have got no business being in the CL.
