Champions league rules question for you guys.

So, to my understanding, UEFA rules stipulate that the same group/individual can't own multiple competing UCL clubs.

Right now, Red Bull Salzburg is first in the Austrian Bundesliga, which, if they win it, would give them a UCL spot.

Of course, RB Leipzig are also in a UCL spot as they are 2nd in BL.

If both finish in a UCL spot, who goes? Salzburg due to winning league? Or would Red Bull be allowed to choose which of the two clubs they'd send?

Or, am I just interpreting the rule wrong to begin with?

Red Bull will have to choose. Really unfair rule if you ask me. Basically if the Barcelona owner buys Real Madrid only one of the two would be allowed to play in the CL :)

I actually just read that apparently UEFA's rules say whoever was placed higher domestically would go through - so, if the season finished as it is today, Salzburg would go to UCL and RBL would not.

That being said, apparently RB Salzburg filed paperwork to split ownership from RB Leipzig so that they would be able to both compete should the situation arise.

Paraphrase but RB president has said they aren't currently worried about it....so they seem to think something will get worked out

Agreed. But I won't be one bit surprised if they find a way around it.

It is an interesting discussion. Please do keep us informed. I didn't find much info on it on the regular outlets. 8)

it is the same in the dom championship...
You have teams which are / were owned my a family for ex Milan (berlusconi) Inter (moratti) roma (sensi) Agnelli (juve) Perez (real) ...
Imagine Silvio owns Milan and his son PerSilvio owns Lazio ... it does not make sense cause there will be conflicts of interest...

Ok. Let's say one day God forbid they discover Bayern is more susceptible to this rule (although hardly applicable) than say, Madrid for example.

What I am saying is that other than the Italians, you mentioned Madrid which has no private owners to the best of my knowledge whereas (if the rule is downgraded to a minority stake status) Bayern could face issues as it is owned, by a smaller stake, by the state of Lower Saxony (VW); same as the Wolves and (since 2013) Ingolstadt for example.

Didn't they (Salzburg) fail in the qualifiers for 3 years straight?! Since when does the Austrian champion start?
They are gonna find a way to weasel themselves out of it... As always...
Thanks for nothing, :pep: !!

Yes, for 2016/17 the Austrian champion would go to the 2nd qualifying round. This season Salzburg won their qualifying round tie and were eliminated by Dinamo Zagreb in the qualification playoff.
So they would have to progress through for this to be a relevant issue.
