Proposed new Bundesliga Calendar

Postby tflags » Tue Apr 09, 2013 12:41 pm

This should be an interesting topic up for discussion. Bild opened up a poll on KHR's recent suggested new Bundesliga calendar. Under the new scheme, there should be no summer break but instead the championship should start on March and end well before the Xmast break.

The reasoning for this proposal is that the best months - weather wise - could be utilized and then use the winter break for travelling and promotional tours. Not mentioned in the proposal is the fact that the dates for the WC in Qatar are still up for discussion. The organizers have already called for a Winter-break schedule so the local leagues could be best served by adjusting their calendars appropriately.

Surprisingly enough, the Bild's poll, 27,000+ votes strong thus far, is close to 80% IN FAVOUR of the proposal.

This same idea was once also proposed for Malta... :) Jan - Oct
The reason being to have our local clubs well ready to play in the european competitions... However it would be crazy because of our summer, were temperatures reach the 35-40 degrees C!!! or having games played @ 21.30 onwards!!!

I don't agree at all

This will have to happen if the world cup in Qatar is going to be in the winter. You'd have to reschedule and probably condense the domestic leagues a couple years before and after WC in order for it to work. This 4 year process would be between both European Championships so it's possible. They might want to reschedule the champions league as well The people who oppose this idea are simply too lazy and and inept.

It would only work if all other major leagues do it that way. Otherwise, it would be nonsense.

I was one who voted against it on bild.de. Football should always be a winter sport unless you play somewhere like Russia where it is impossible to play in winter. And even they've changed and stopped playing in the middle of summer now in order to be more in line with the rest of Europe. you'd also have the bizarre situation of the last year's qualifiers playing in the the present European competitions, which used to be the case with the russian teams so they changed it. WORST IDEA EVER

I thought this was going to be about more games on Sundays instead of Saturdays because of EL games.

Re: Proposed new Bundesliga Calendar

The March-October calendar is currently used in many countries, good examples are Russia, the United States, the Scandinavian Countries and for over a hundred years Football calendars ran with the calendar year in South America, until in 1985 Argentina adopted the European style calendar and other countries then followed.

This proposal is nothing new and I am glad that League officials do not even try it, otherwise we might end up with frequent structural changes and one day we could lose track of who has been champion of what. The same reason why I oppose having the Qatar World Cup in the Winter. If Qatar can’t have a summer tournament it should have presented its bid asking FIFA for a winter World Cup tournament. Their bid was full of futuristic stadia that can be dismantled and donated to Sudan, Mega Air Conditioning microclimates and hanging clouds to shade the whole country, the FIFA ExCo members voted for all that crap because lack of brain or something that accidently fell in their pockets but they should honor their obligations on respecting the rules and the law.

Going back to the European Calendar a March-October schedule will never be approved by the FA and money talks, if the EPL does not go with it ……. I am in favor of preserving the calendar the way it is with the rest of the European Leagues following the Bundesliga Model: 18 clubs in the upper tier (34 match days) and single round elimination for the Domestic Cup which allows for a Winter Break. The BL is fine the way it is, other major European Leagues should follow and do the same.

Added a poll here. I'm not quite in favour of this proposal because of the detrimental effect this would probably have on the Champions League run. The players will be tired (league's end) by the end of the group stages and out of competitive match practice by the start of the last 16.

The beauty of football is grinding out wins in bad weather to continue your title chase. Playing in the summer would seem much less intense, not to mention the clash with the big tournaments.

FA is not even ready to allow winter break because of the profits during the festive season.
I hardly believe they'll agree on such a proposal.
