It feels like Bayern's midfield cannot boss the game. It was the same last season too. There is always a gap between them and attac and defense when defending or attacking.

Bayern, with an impressive 51% possession of the ball, was less than right passes. This probably has not happened since Guardiola took over the team. The era of useless ball possession is over, reactive team has begun. Until never again Guardiola

Yes, cause we are playing really good football now :)

Why don't you check the possession stats under Heynckes?

Terrible game. Back to that dreadful 3 man midfield which turned out a 4-4-2 with Ribery not tracking back, Hummels losing balls and overall sick, and Tolisso plus Vidal overlapping Rudy all over the place. Muller invinsible and Lewan on the wrong side of the offside line. Sule slow and again Hummels with a dismal performance. Ulreich saving the impossible while unconfortable on the high press. The referee quite permissive, Belarabi deserved a red card (or two) and Rafinha a yellow.

Quite glad Leverkusen has not replaced the Mexican yet and blue eyes is still out injured or this would have gotten as unconfortable as the weather.

For the love of God didn't we already try with a 4-3-3 last season?

Probably Heynckes' possessions were smaller. The current game can evolve although it is not ideal today, it only makes Guardiola superior

A decent match, but not a lot to take away from it IMO.

Didn't create a lot of chances it seemed. Truthfully I thought Bayer were the more threatening team for most the match.
Couldn't hold possession and couldn't build up much play. But, it also feels like the guys need more time to find rhythm with each other, so that's kinda understandable.
Our new guys were really good. Great matches from all of them.
Alaba played decent again, which is positive. Ribery ran a lot, but didn't seem to do much with it. Robben and Lewandowski still seem borderline incompatible. Vidal had a good match overall, but to me it felt like he was "chasing the game" a lot. Like he was always one step behind. Coman was quite good when he came on.
Our defense is going to be a huge liability going forward if things don't change. Individually, it's not bad. We have the talent. But they are so disjointed and uncoordinated. A team with a better attack will have a field day.
Surprisingly, Ulreich was quite good.

As I said, the defense feels particularly disjoineted, but for me this is symptomatic of the team as a whole: our attack is disconnected from our midfield and our midfield is disconnected from our defense. Our midfielders all played well, but we still never looked to be able to dominate the midfield as we did two seasons ago.

Overall, if I set aside the general feeling of excitement that Bundesliga is back, it was a pretty boring match.

How did Belllarabi not get a card for his rugby like challenge on Kimmich?! The referee was too lenient. :|

You are wrong Hynches team had more possession. 2012-2013 team could balance Van Gaal's possession base with a direct counter attacking football.

Bayern xG 2.97 - xG 1.89 Bayer (https://understat.com/match/8259)

I counted 10 big chances, don't remember have I ever seen that much.

The expected goalsand expected assists data fromthat website reveal some interesting things:
Image
Image
NPG stands for non-penalty goals, NPxG stands for non-penalty expected goals, aX stands for expected assists, and NPxG90+aX90 means expected goals plus expected assists per 90 minutes. That's the metric that we should focus on because several of the best players(Brandt, Muller, Robben) did not play the full 90 minutes.

Lewandowski is lower in this metric because his penalty isn't counted; if it were, it would add 0.77 to his score.

The main surprise for me is that Muller actually appears to have been decent. The system we were playing didn't really seem to work well for him. I do wish that we had switched into a 4-2-3-1 for the last 30 minutes by bringing off one the midfielders instead of the dreaded 4-3-3.

Other than that, I know that I've been an advocate of getting Brandt, but watching this game just made me want him on our team even more.

I was very impressed with Julian Brandt's impact in the second half. After he was brought on, Leverkusen's play changed. It will be interesting to see how he plays this season. It's a big season for him. Bayern will most likely follow him closely this season since he has a low buy-out clause next summer.

"You have to go back a long time to find a game in which the Bavarians have allowed so many chances. Ancelotti will have to worry. "

Oliver Kahn after Bayern allowed Leverkusen 20 attempts on goal.

Bayern had only 13.

Must be FIFA on easy mode.

According to me Coman was good and I feel very happy when he plays well..coz ur future literally hinges on how he develops coz we won't be able to afford 2 WC wingers..so we can buy 1 and Coman HAS to develop into one.
Tolisso was good..finally we have a midfielder not afraid of shooting.
Vidal had an excellent 1st half ..its just a matter of time before he gets back to full fitness and stamina..
Ulreich was EXCELLENT..
Sule was superb ..
Robben looked good when he came on..
Sule was good
Now the sad part..
Hummels will take some more time also he was unwell..
Ribery should come on for the last 20-30 mins he has lost it..he can't be effective for 90 mins.
Rafinha should be barred from the stadium we looked shit after he came on..and he played disastrous..no positional sense at all..
Muller..I don't know what to say..he is not taking shots anymore..his ball control is getting worse..we need a miracle for him to transform at this stage..
Lewandowski needs to get his sharpness back but I know its just a matter of if not when..

Finally, can't wait for James to come then this team will become a nightmare for opponents.
