Why is Wolfsburg playing a back 3 with a single CB + a RB and a DM??? A big part of their demise is of their own making...

Dortmund god..

Tuchel is a german Guardiola. All for possession. A bad pass and the opponent had a counter attack to score

For good football : Neuer - Kimmich, Boateng, Hummels, Alaba - Vidal (Tolisso), Thiago (Tolisso) - Robben, Müller (James), James (Ribéry) - Lewandowski

For boring football : 4-3-3

Except the whole Dortmund side was positioned to snuff that out. When the first turnover happens there's five or six Dortmund players behind the ball. The problem is the individual training of players not committing or executing the defense properly. Dortmund fails to properly recover the ball and the ball breaks again to Ji.

Honestly makes me grateful for some of the players we have. For all of Thiago's talent, he doesn't shy away from the defensive side and commits 100% to racing back to recover the ball. And no one can accuse Vidal of slouching. For all the beautiful football Dortmund and Arsenal can put together, it takes that dirty work on the backside to make champions.

I said it earlier in the season, that Tuchel was over-doing the Pep thing. IMO, Mkhitaryan, Gündogan and Hummels' departure ruined the beautiful 433/4141 they had and, instead of keeping the system and buying accordingly, Tuchel decided to go with a new system which is more alike ours last season. Heavy wingplay by Dembele and Pulisic, weaker MF, back 3, etc. Their previous 433 (which was very central-oriented and *didn't* rely on wingplay at all) was fantastic, shame they lost it.

I don't think their midfield is *that* much worse. Their defense is awful and should have been rectified, but a significant part of that is our constant poaching of their better players.

The offense is a bit of a "play the hand you are dealt" kind of a situation. Last season Dortmund (usually) had available Reus-Aubameyang-Mkhitaryan. Three key players whose strengths were through the center and interchanging with each other. Mkhitaryan often plays as a 10, Reus is a capable second striker who plays out on the wing, and Aubameyang is a striker who often plays out on the wing. This season Mkhitaryan refused an extension with the club that stuck by him and left to Man United, and Reus is often injured. Humbly, I submit to you that Tuchel would love to still have that kind of an offense, but with the corps of attackers he has now, perhaps he has no choice but to arrange the system to create isolations out wide.

You're absolutely right, but they did make mistakes in the transfer window IMO. Schürrle, Bartra and Götze namely. They went for a balance by buying extremely talented youngsters and a few established guessmarks. It was in the latter group that they grossly missed. They also failed to upgrade the FBs (I think they will use Guerreiro in MF to great effect). CBs replacement needed a much better job IMO, why didn't they look into Süle or Tah?

Schalke, Leverkusen, Dortmund this season = a complete disaster.
