Lothar Matthaus has thrown his hat into the ring to succeed Ottmar Hitzfeld as Bayern Munich manager at the end of the season.

Hitzfeld is currently back in charge of the Bavarian giants following the sacking of Felix Magath following a poor run of results.

The 58-year-old tactician is only under contract for the rest of the season and a number of names have been linked with the post for next term.

Bayern legend Matthaus, who currently manages Austria's Red Bull Salzburg, has hinted he is ready to coach in the Bundesliga.

When asked if he could succeed Hitzfeld in the summer, he told Bild: "Of course. I am a Bundesliga insider and especially of Bayern.

"And it must be clear to whoever looks at my life up to now: my goal has to be the Bundesliga."

Agreed, though, same as a player, a coach can also develop and improve. Perhaps when the time comes, he could be a candidate. But I don't really see him replacing Hitzfeld in summer.
