HARGREAVES SLAMS SPITEFUL SPANISH
By Ben Rumsby, PA Sport
Owen Hargreaves has accused Real Madrid of responding in a "spiteful" manner to David Beckham's impending departure.
The Bayern Munich midfielder, an England team-mate of the 31-year-old at last summer's World Cup, believes Beckham "will have the last laugh" over his controversial switch to Major League Soccer outfit LA Galaxy.
His summer exit from the Bernabeu is is danger of descending into acrimony, with Real boss Fabio Capello refusing to pick him for the rest of the season, and club president Ramon Calderon labelling the player "an average cinema actor living in Hollywood".
"I was a bit surprised by Real's announcement that Becks will not play for them again," Hargreaves wrote in his column for BBC Sport.
"A contract is a contract - it is their decision what they want to do but it is possibly the first time I have heard of such a move.
"Players coming to the end of their contract are allowed to sign a contract with any club in January - that is the rule.
"At Bayern, Hasan Salihamidzic has just signed a deal with Juventus and I am sure he will play some games for us for the rest of the season
"So only Real know the reasons for that but it seems a bit spiteful.
"For Becks, this is a new challenge and a new chapter. For anybody that doubts him, I predict Becks will probably have the last laugh.
"I admire him for everything he has achieved and the way he has handled it - not many people could have withstood what he has gone through.
"It takes a unique person and that is why he is a good example for people to look up to. I have had nothing but great experiences with him."
Hargreaves has been at the centre of a transfer wrangle of his own in recent months, with Bayern forced to fend off the advances of Barclays Premiership leaders Manchester United.
The 25-year-old, who is close to returning to action from a broken leg, can see himself following Beckham's lead by playing in the MLS later in his career.
"I think it is commendable that people take on these new challenges rather than sticking with a comfortable situation," said Hargreaves, who was born in Canada.
"Becks still wants to achieve a lot in his career and has set himself goals - this is probably one of them.
"But what he brings to a league that is not that popular at the moment is a big name and he is going to be hugely influential.
"It also opens the door for others to go over there and play and I am sure you will see some other star players commit their future to MLS.
"Towards the end of my career, I could definitely see myself playing over there. It would be interesting especially as I grew up in North America and certainly something to think about." |

Beckham stood by Hargreaves in the build up of the World Cup, when Hargreaves was being heavily criticized. Now Hargreaves returned the favour |

I'm not sure if that is going to happen. Many folks have said that it's a little too late. They say that he should've came over a few years ago but his career wasn't declining at that time. I think the areas where there is a football team the popularity will increase but I don't think it's going to increase nation wide (I hope I'm wrong on this).
The rumor going around is since Beck and his wife, Posh, are good friends with Tom Cruise and his wife, this move is more for her career and rubbing elbows in Hollywood. Also, Tom said that Posh would be great as the leading lady in a film he's producing. Yuck!!! |

I doubt that Beckam came here to make the sport more popular, and I don't think he came for the money either, he's already loaded. I think he came just because it was his wife's decision oh and to piss Capello off for not letting him play enough.
I'm not going to be surprised when I see Beckam play a movie in Hollyhood |

well probably that's the first offer he heard, and why say no to $250 million
LA Galaxy knows that they will make way more with the tickets, shirts and stuff like that. OR LA Galaxy doesn't know what to do with their money? |

I thought Becks would want to further his career, not go into semi-retirement aka the MLS. He's still a great player, but he's going to the MLS because of lack of motivation. |

His paycheck is actually $10 million. However, with all the endorsements and such he'll make the $250 million.
He says that he's excited about being the ambassador for football but I think he's trying to promote his wife more than his career. Being friends with Tom Crusie will help that cause to an extent but his wife really needs to get some talent. Her voice was one of the weakest in the group (Spice Girls). |

'E.T. Attacks" staring Victoria "Posh" Beckham. She's no longer needs to phone home.
It's been reported on GOLTV that Beckham is making 500 times more each week than his fellow teammates. WOW!!! One player says he understands why Beck is getting that money, but at the same time there is some resentment. Heck, I think Beckham is making more money than the MLS altogether. I have this feeling that this is not going to work out the way they want it to. |

Yup, the highest any MLS player has ever gotten for a salary was $1.2 million a year. That's a pretty pathetic figure compared to Beck's salary. |
