Riquelme is facing a crossroads at Villarreal as the number 8 has moved from being a club stalwart to having a foot out of the Castellón de la Plana outfit. The latest buzz from Spain and Germany suggests that the playmaker may be set for Bayern Munich.

As Ballacks’ recent criticism hinted, Bayern Munich are in need of more creative options in midfield and Juan Román Riquelme is seen as a potential way of jazzing up the Bavarians’ play with a different approach and pace to their existing options.

There’s been some nerves chafed within the Villarreal squad and Pellegrini has cut the midfielder from the last two matches and probably the upcoming fixture too. Villarreal are slated to welcome a suitably juicy bid as the Argentine looks for a new challenge.

The figure quoted for a potential move to take place hovers around the 18 million Euro mark and follows hot on the heels of recent declarations by Bayern Munich boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge that the club was searching for a midfielder.

In declarations made to German TV station ‘Sport1’, Rummenigge admitted that the Roten will be doing some winter shopping. "We’re continuing with the negotiations to sign a midfielder and I hope that we’ll be able to announce a new arrival soon", he explained.

Villarreal are slated to arrange a serious meeting with Riquelme and his agent to define the player’s position on staying and giving his all or making a move away from Spain and try his luck in the Bundesliga.

Hoeness laughed off rumours emanating from Spain that Bayern have bid over 18 million euros (23.2 million dollars) for Villarreal's Argentine international Riquelme.

"We are not mentally ill," he said. "We haven't made an offer and don't intend making one. Riquelme isn't an issue for us."

18 million euros is a bit too much for Riquelme, don't you think? Next season he'll be 29. In contrast, Robben is 23 and represents much better value for money in my opinion.

True but still, Riquelme is a world class playmaker, which exactly what Bayern need and what if Robben doesnt sign for us?? Or Ribery??? Face it Bayern needs a back up plan. Also didnt we sign Makaay at 28 or 29 for how much? 19.5M??

Boca Juniors president Mauricio Macri has announced the return to the club of Villarreal playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme on loan to dispute the Argentine championship and Copa Libertadores.

"I am happy because we have closed the return of Riquelme to the club," Macri said of the transfer.

Boca will pay Villarreal 1.8 million euros for the loan period, which lasts four months.

It was reported on Wednesday that Riquelme would only sign for a full year, but after it became clear that such an offer would not be forthcoming, he seems to have backed down.

Yellow Submarine coach Manuel Pellegrini has overlooked the former Argentina star this season, fearing that his head is not in the right place for top-level football.

Riquelme retired from the international set-up after criticism directed at him in Argentina following the World Cup last summer.
