By losing 3-2 at Arminia Bielefeld, Werder not only failed to overtake leader Schalke _it also dropped to third place behind Stuttgart.
Werder could finish the season without a trophy despite closing in on the Bundesliga championship and the UEFA Cup title.
Bremen remains two points behind Schalke and one back from Stuttgart in the German league. In the UEFA Cup, it lost the first leg of the semifinals to Espanyol 3-0.
"Some of the players cannot handle the pressure and the heavy load," Werder general manager Klaus Allofs said. "We are not going to achieve our lofty goals in this way. We have to see which players are not up to the task."
"But it would be bad to give up now," he added.
Schalke lost 2-1 on Friday in Bochum and Bremen again failed to take advantage. Twice before this season, Werder hasn't capitalized on Schalke's slip-ups.
Stuttgart could now end up winning its first title in 10 years with three rounds left in the season. Stuttgart won 1-0 at Borussia Moenchengladbach, which became the first team to be relegated.
Bremen next plays Espanyol at home and must hope for a near miracle to overcome the three-goal deficit.
Coach Thomas Schaaf says his team fought well against Bielefeld, but "made too many mistakes."
After fighting back twice to level the game, Bremen lost to a goal that resulted from a mix-up between backup goalkeeper Andreas Reinke and a teammate.
Reinke was playing to gain match practice because starter Tim Wiese is suspended for the second-leg match against Espanyol.
Werder has now lost two straight games after a few turbulent days following revelations that striker Miroslav Klose had talks with Bayern Munich.
Klose apologized for not informing the club ahead of his meeting with Bayern officials. After being substituted after an indifferent game in Barcelona, Klose was one of the better players in Bielefeld and scored one goal.
Werder has said Klose would be allowed to join a foreign club before his contract ends at the end of next season, but would not be allowed to sign for a Bundesliga rival.
Midfielder Torsten Frings is also considering a move and has been linked with Juventus.

In the other Sunday game, mid-table Energie Cottbus had Karim Haggui to thank for their 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen after his 84th minute winner secured the points and another season in the top flight.
Cottbus' Romanian striker Sergiu Radu grabbed an early goal after eight minutes, before Bayer striker Stefan Kiessling equalised with a header just before half-time. |

Moenchengladbach now cannot escape the relegation zone. It is the second time the
five-time German champions have been relegated after going down in
1999.
"The morale of the team was positive. We twice came from behind
but what came after that was not enough for a top team," said Bremen
sports director Klaus Allofs.
"We made mistakes which you cannot afford to make. We are in a
position where the pressure is on and maybe not everybody is coping
with the pressure."
Bremen were looking to put a 3-0 UEFA Cup defeat on Thursday at
Espanyol behind them and began brightly with a header against the
post by Brazilian midfielder Diego.
But the visitors went behind on the half hour when defender Heiko
Westermann rose unchallenged to head in a Joerg Boehme free-kick.
"We had a hard game on Thursday and you could see we were lacking
the absolute freshness," said Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf.
"But the team kept trying to push forward right to the end and it
was a great game from both sides. We simply made too many mistakes
and gave the ball away too often, and the sum of these mistakes made
it hard to recover."
Bielefeld coach Ernst Middendorp praised an "incredible"
performance from his side.
"We still need more points to be absolutely safe. This is a step
forward but we have not made it yet," he said. |
