Bayern coach Felix Magath criticised his men for "applying too little pressure in the first half" during Wednesday's unexpected home defeat to Hanover 96, not the first time this term the champions have struggled to unpick defensive opponents. "But we'll be stronger once our absent players start coming back over the next few days and weeks," the coach commented.
Reaction to Bayern v Hanover 96:
Felix Magath: "That was further proof of our problems against defensively-minded teams this season. We were too unambitious in the first half, we were applying too little pressure. Hanover 96 defended aggressively and effectively, and covered plenty of ground. We duly conceded the goal just before half-time. My team bounced back in the second half. We gave it our best shot, we camped out in their half, but we created no clear-cut chances, so Hanover's win is a fair result. We'll be stronger once our absent players start coming back over the next few days and weeks. The team wasn't in great physical shape today either. Roy Makaay and Claudio Pizarro for example, they both have a touch of the flu, and we only decided to risk playing them late this afternoon."
Mark van Bommel: "I know we're six points behind Bremen now, but nothing's decided yet. But it can't go on like this, we need points as soon as possible. Ideally we'll win four or five games in a row. I think we were a bit unfortunate too in the second half, but overall, we're capable of far better football than that."
Daniel van Buyten: "Shame. It would have been an important three points today. We weren't good in attack, we didn't invest enough to deserve a win. We have to be more mobile, Hanover were better than us in that respect. Hanover were really up for it, but a Bayern side has to do better than that. We have to go out there and do it when it matters."
Dieter Hecking (Hanover coach): "We weren't good against Bochum last week, but we've been moving in the right direction recently. We always go out there looking to perform and take the points, so we weren't scared before coming to Munich. We played with great tactical discipline, we closed them down, we took one of the few chances we had, and we've won the game. The team's given the right answer and we're out of the drop zone. Now we have to keep going against Stuttgart."
Michael Tarnat (Hanover, ex-Bayern): "It rates as an easy match for us, as we had nothing to lose. Everyone expects you to lose, so we win whatever happens. I jope that'll mean a new start to the season for us. It was tough for Bayern today, we kept it very tight, and we scored at just the right time. We put up a great fight, so congratulations to the team. Obviously, after six years here in Munich, it's always special when you come back."

Geez, start blaming it on injuries and illnesses now, won’t you now Magath? |

Magath should know that blaming the problems on injuries and sickness is no excuse when the team doesn't play with desire. The backups cacn still do the job but only if the desire is there and this team is not motivated to win. The situation is so sad. Even sadder because Magath won't get out of his seat and see the lack of motivation in the team. |

What does he mean "we gave it our best shot"? I thought Bayern were playing at maybe 30%. They lacked their motivation. If our "best shot" involves not being able to score against Hannover at home, then how does he explain how "we're happy with the squad we have"?
Our best shot would have been if we were all over them. And if we did, we'd have scored at least 3 goals. |
