The European Football Association (UEFA) has handed out a 2 match ban to Bayern Manager Uli Hoeneß. This represents UEFA’s punishment to Hoeneß after his verbal spat with Inter Milan’s assistant coach Sinisa Mihajlovic during the 85th minute of Bayern’s away tie on 27 September, when Inter’s Fabio Grosso was shown the red card.
The Bayern Manager was incensed by the Italian’s crude elbowing of Willy Sagnol. “As I saw Willy Sagnol lying on the ground I just lost it (…). In that situation my instinctive reaction is to defend my players. (…). If I happen to get punished for that, then so be it”, Hoeneß explained his actions after the game.
After their disagreement, Hoeneß and Mihajlovic were banished from the touchline to the stand by referee Steve Bennett. Mihajlovic has also been banned for the next two Champions League games, receiving the same punishment as Hoeneß.
This means that for Bayern’s away tie against Sporting Lisbon on 18 October and the return leg on 31 October in Munich, Hoeneß is banned from contacting the team both before and during the match and from entering the changing rooms.
