Post subject: Bayern withdraw Lahm contract offer Reply with quote

22.04.2008

Talks between Bayern and 24-year-old defender Philipp Lahm over an extension to the player’s current contract have concluded without an agreement, prompting the club to withdraw its original offer on Tuesday. As things stand, Lahm would be free to leave Munich on a free transfer once his current contract expires on 30 June 2009.

By contrast, a deal taking 24-year-old Jan Schlaudraff to Bundesliga rivals Hanover 96 has been finalised. The striker’s contract with Bayern, not set to expire until 30 June 2010, will be cancelled. “Unfortunately, I’m absolutely certain we’ve not seen Jan’s true quality in his time here. He never really got his chance because the competition was so fierce. After all, he’s had Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski ahead of him", chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told fcbayern.de on Tuesday.

Rummenigge wishes Jan good luck

Schlaudraff left relegated Alemannia Aachen last summer for Bayern, but has been unable to command a place in the senior team. The Germany international has made 12 appearances for Munich, but has yet to start a match. “I wish him the best of luck in Hanover. He’s been highly professional in his time at Bayern,“ Rummenigge commented. The player moves for an undisclosed fee. “We’ve agreed on a figure which is OK from our point of view,“ the chairman stated.

Schlaudraff will only spend a single season at Bayern, but Munich-born Lahm joined the club as a young boy and has made 74 Bundesliga appearances in a red jersey. A member of the Germany side which finished third at the 2006 World Cup, he made the breakthrough as a professional in a loan spell with VfB Stuttgart from 2003 to 2005. Under then VfB boss Felix Magath, Lahm played 53 times in the Bundesliga and also made his Germany debut.

That sucks, Lahm is a quality player, but if he wants to leave, there is nothing we can do..
