Italian Press: Lippi To Take Over At Bayern Munich?

La Stampa reports that Marcelo Lippi is being heavily linked with the soon-to-be-vacant Bayern Munich post.

With the Germna outfit set to return to Champions League football next season, and with Ottmar Hitzfeld all but guaranteed to leave in June, the door is open for a new top-level appointment, and World Cup-winner Lippi could be the man.

Lippi is thought to hold the interest of the likes of club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who admires the former Juventus and Italy boss' cautious but effective approach to the game. Indeed, both also share a history of being involved at Internazionale.

Furthermore, Bayern have experience of Italian managers as they formerly operated under Giovanni Trapattoni, and of Italian players with Luca Toni currently leading the line.

However, before making a formal approach, the club must seek a way around the language barrier. Lippi has previously expressed his reluctance to coach in a country in which he does not know the language, such as England or Germany.

But with the major Italian clubs currently looking unlikely to sack their bosses, and Roberto Donadoni being in situ with the Azzurri until at least July, this could tempt Lippi all the same.

Well yeah the play would be boring but results would come. He is proven at the highest level while the likes of Schaaf are not.

Honestly, I really prefer to be fan of a team that its admired by having guts and playing good attacking football and not necessarily winning, than being a fan of a team that wins but everyone else hates because of playing an ultra-defensive game, e.g. Italy in the WC...Milan in the last CL final...

Now in terms of football, I don't know...I got a totally different impression during the WC, almost everyone I spoke to who was not a German or Italian fan hated the fact that Italy won because they thought it was a victory for defensive football (and I don't think they had anything personal against Italians, like I don't)...

"And Bayern were never famous for pretty football". I could not agree more, we even had Trappatoni, the master of catenaccio, as our coach...but wasn't the first half of this season (especially the first quarter) the most exciting for Bayern fans when they played great, beautiful football????... thats what I want....

First of all, Lippi is not coming to Bayern. He does not speak German and I do believe that Uli and company want a coach who can speak German.

Secondly, you either want a team that wins or you want a team that plays beautiful football. The way it's going nowadays a team is either gonna be one of them but not both. Also, what some might considered boring others might find entertaining. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

Thirdly, I wouldn't mind seeing Lippi at Bayern. I don't care if he is Italian or that he want to play defensively. He can get the win. I gotta admit that he's not my first choice but he wouldn't be all that bad either.

Fourth, I, too, think Germans are more hated or at least easy to hate. If people get upset they always have to say some Nazi crap. Perhaps Germans and Italians are tied because of fans being immature.

It won't be easy finding a replacement if you look at what Calle said about Hitzfelt after the Bolton game. No good coach wants to be thrown under the bus like that.

It should be a coach that can shoulder the pressure at Bayern and deliver the results, otherwise, beatuiful attacking football is played in England and Spain.

Never liked him after he spat on Rudi Voeller thrice! in 1990 WC...

Van Basten is apparently being linked to Bayern and he is someone who can speak good german, but I think he has to prove himself yet. Holland is not playing so great under him in spite of all the talent they got. Also, I'm sure Van Bommel would hate that!

The Bundesliga is far more physical, and slower than either the Epl or La Liga. This translates into less skill, more endurance, and fouls. I'm not saying that the BL and Serie A are void of good and even beautiful football at times, but when Bayern started killing teams 4&5 nill, Bunesliga teams sarted chopping players down and putting 11 behind the ball. Why? They lack the speed and skill to compete; they don't have players and the football suffers, which is why a technical Mauirnhio or Lippi aproach might work a little better. Serie A right now is a better league than the BL but look how bummed people were about their defensive World Cup victory. Its not as beautifull to watch.

I agree with you, elcalifornio, in almost everything you said. However, IMO only Man U and Arsenal play really attractive football in EPL. Chelsea, for example, is a more physical team nowadays just as most of the remaining teams in EPL.

Regarding a coach for Bayern...KLINSMANN!!!!!!! (it wont happen though)....
