Eleven stars are still away on international duty and four are missing with injury, but Christian Lell was a welcome addition to the party which resumed the normal training programme on Tuesday afternoon. Four days ahead of the DFB German Cup first round clash away to cult Hamburg outfit St Pauli, head coach Felix Magath took charge of an 11-strong squad, including three goalkeepers, for a first training session following a three-day break.

Lell's return was cause for celebration after the youngster had spent six weeks on the sidelines following a serious shoulder injury sustained in a pre-season friendly against Austrian second division club Linz. "I'm already feeling pretty good," the player told fcayern.de. Despite the long lay-off, he had "no problem" with the physical side of the game, and has declared himself fit for Saturday evening's Cup tie.

Double shift for Kahn and Brazzo

The session focused mainly on close control and passing, although Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic had opened proceedings for the day with an unofficial extra workout in the morning.

The Bayern captain spent what was technically his free time working out with goalkeeping coach Sepp Maier, while Brazzo limbered up and put in a few laps of the ground. Both were closely watched by some 150 schoolchildren using a day of their summer holidays for a trip to the Säbener Strasse.

Two sessions on Wednesday

Following a 90-minute workout in the afternoon, Magath dismissed his charges until the following day, when he has ordered sessions both before and after lunch. The majority of the club's internationals are not expected back at the club until Thursday afternoon.

It'll be difficult for him to play much as he'd need to displace Lahm. But maybe he'll play for a bit in the cup next Saturday so that Lahm is a bit rested in view of the Champions League next week, and because he'd have played a match tomorrow for Germany (against San Marino)
