BERLIN (AFP) — Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich are set to spend 14 million euros (20.45 million dollars) for teenage defender Breno from Brazilian first-division side Sao Paulo, German tabloid Bild reported on Friday.
The German giants want the 18-year-old, full name Breno Vinicius Rodrigues Borges, to join them during the winter break and bolster their defence which was been exposed in recent weeks.
Breno would partner compatriot Lucio in the heart of Bayern's defence and had also been courted by Spanish giants Real Madrid, which forced the German side to raise their bid from 11 million euros, according to Bild.
Breno was recommended to Bayern by former goal king Giovanne Elber who played for the Munich side between 1997 and 2003 and has been recruited as a scout in his native Brazil.
Bayern have already spent a German record 69 million euros this summer bringing the likes of French star Franck Ribery, Miroslav Klose and Luca Toni to Munich. |

A move by Real Madrid may have left them on the outer in the battle for Sao Paulo defender Breno.
The 18 year-old Brazilian has Real, Bayern Munich and AC Milan chasing his signature and it's emerged that the Spanish club actually demanded he undergo an X-Ray examination to prove his age.
"If Real really want me," said Breno, "I shouldn't have to undergo any examinations. They can just try for another defender.
"As far as I'm concerned, there's no problem. I am sure of my age." |

This is a strange move by Real Madrid, and by not trusting the player they are effectively shooting themselves in the foot. Unless, of course, he is NOT 18 years old.
If he IS 18 years old, it means Real Madrid think very highly of his skill at such a young age, and the fact that Bayern are in the race to sign this player is great! |

Real Madrid are set to be reported to FIFA over their pursuit of Sao Paulo defender Breno.
Sao Paulo are angry with Real and Bayern Munich over their chase for the 18 year-old stopper and a spokesman for the Brazilian club said: "We want FIFA to step in because we have not received any official approach.
"They have been dealing directly with the player. We'll fight until the end because justice must be done and this situation cannot be allowed to continue." |

The father of hot Sao Paulo prospect Breno claims German giants Bayern Munich are leading the reace to sign the 18-year old center back.
"I'm ready to take the kid there," Claudio Francisco told Brazilian magazine Lance. "From what I've seen, it's a great idea for Breno to join Bayern."
AC Milan and Real Madrid are also interested, but look set to come on a joint second place for his signature.
"They wouldn't field him as a starter with the squads they have," he explained. "That means they'd probably be looking to loan him out and that's just not what we want."
"The only concrete proposal that's come through has been from Bayern." |

Bayern Munich are on the verge of clinching a deal to sign Breno from São Paulo after the defender completed a medical at the club ahead of the winter transfer window.
The Bundesliga giants were keen to bolster their back line and are reported have agreed to pay €12.25m for the 18-year-old, who has yet to represent his country.
Breno was also being watched by Real Madrid, but Bayern have stepped in with a concrete offer and are close to making an official announcement about the player.
German daily Bild claim that the Brazilian is in Bavaria this week to put pen-to-paper on a four-and-a-half year contract.
While Breno cannot play for the club until January 1, Bayern were keen to wrap up the move before Christmas to fend off any competition for his signature.
The 1.87m defender was voted Brazilian football's best newcomer by journalists and was recommended to the club by their former striker and current scout, Giovane Élber. |

Bayern Munich are closing in on the signing of Brazilian defender Breno, who was reportedly in the Bavarian city on Thursday undergoing a medical.
Reports in Brazil on Wednesday confirmed a deal worth around £8.6million had been agreed between the Bundesliga side and Breno's current employers Sao Paolo.
And Germany's Bild newspaper on Thursday claims the 18-year-old was in Munich ready to put pen-to-paper on a four-year contract, making him Bayern's first winter signing.
Officially, a deal can only go through after January 1, but Bayern are keen to convince the youngster his future lies with them before Christmas so as to beat off competition from Real Madrid.
Breno, who was voted Brazil's best newcomer of 2007 by local sports journalists, should then join his new team-mates for training in the New Year. |

Bayern unveil 'signing for the future' Breno
There are still 11 days until Christmas, but Bayern unwrapped an early present on Thursday evening with the unveiling of a new player for the first-team squad. Germany’s most successful club and Brazilian top flight outfit FC Sao Paulo have agreed a transfer deal for defensive all-rounder Breno. The talented 18-year-old, whose given name is Vinicius Rodrigues Borges, officially joins Bayern on 1 January 2008 and will report for mid-season training with the rest of the squad on 7 January, before travelling with his new team-mates to the Marbella training camp from 13 to 19 January.
“We’re delighted we've succeeded in signing Breno, a young and exceptionally talented player,“ commented Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, describing the new arrival at the Säbener Strasse as “a signing for the future.“ Subject to a medical, the centre-half will pen a four-and-a-half year deal binding him to the Munich club until 30 June 2012. The player moves from Sao Paulo for an undisclosed fee.
Stunning prospect
A Brazil U-20 international and captain of his country’s Olympic football team, Breno shot to prominence in the Brazilian top flight last season, his first since signing professional forms. He is credited with a major contribution to FC Sao Paulo sealing the championship title with a full five games to spare, conceding just 19 goals in 38 matches. Breno also scored two goals in 22 appearances, and was named “Newcomer of the Season 2007“ by Brazilian football journalists.
“He’s an absolutely stunning prospect,“ enthused former Bayern star Giovane Elber. “Even at such a young age, he’s already genuinely world class. He’s good in the air, robust, quick, two-footed and immensely composed for his age. He’s comfortable on the ball, he never resorts to hopeful long balls forward and always looks for a team-mate. He’s rarely forced into sliding tackles and always tries to beat the man he’s marking to the ball,“ Breno’s fellow-countryman Elber continued.
Pursued by clutch of European giants
Bayern fought off reported interest in the versatile defender, equally comfortable at right-back or centre-half, from other leading European clubs including Real Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus and Fiorentina. “I want to play for a great team,“ Breno was recently quoted as saying. His wish has now come true with his impending arrival at Bayern, ready to play his part in shaping a great team for the future. |

Woohoo! Welcome to the club, Breno!
It's great in that he can also play as RB, meaning should Sagnol still press for a move, we'd have Lahm, Lell, Breno and Altintop who can play as RB. |

Yeah, I'm pretty happy about this signing, though I think it means that either Sagnol or Lell could be on the move. I'd rather see Lell go since I don't think he's got the quality we need, but if the news is to be believed we all know who's on the way out.
But nevermind that, hopefully Breno will fulfil his potential in Munchen and become a great player! |
