Post subject: Rummenigge Demands Goal Line Refs Reply with quote

Bayern Munich Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has called for the introduction of goal line referees to judge whether the ball has crossed the line.

After watching Bayern have a perfectly legitimate goal ruled out against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, the ex-international striker told Premiere, “We need a goal line referee who can signal to the referee whether it was a goal or not.”

Referee Knut Kircher waved play on even though TV replays showed the shot from Miroslav Klose was clearly over the line.

Bayern manager Uli Hoeneß had already demanded the introduction of goal line cameras after legitimate goals from Roberto Hilbert (v Werder) and Gerald Asamoah (v Bielefeld) had been wrongly ruled out earlier this season.

“The disadvantage of cameras would be that the game would be interrupted. Goal line referees are more practical” Rummenigge said.

Surprise support came from Leverkusen trainer Michael Skibbe.

“In principle I believe that technology should be used to help the officials. I think that a goal line camera is certainly possible in the top league. When you already have 55 cameras installed, one more is not a problem” he explained.

Volker Roth, Chairman of the DFB refereeing committee, has said that the DFB alone cannot decide on the introduction of technology.

“It’s understandable to have emotional reactions after such events, but we have to be aware that the use of goal line cameras is not permitted at the moment” he explained.

“FIFA are responsible for introducing the changes that are being demanded.

“On behalf of the German Referees, I can confidently say that we are not against technology where it makes sense, quite the opposite. We welcome it.”
