Lehmann Given German Ultimatum
First the howling errors, then the injury, and now he finds himself the number two at Arsenal. This season has not started well for Jens Lehmann. At least he can rely on being the first choice keeper for the German national team. Or can he?
For the first time both trainer Joachim Löw and manager Oliver Bierhoff have come out and put a little pressure on the 37 year old keeper. More than pressure, they have in fact issued an ultimatum.
“We will wait until after the matches in October and November and see what happens” explained Löw. “Of course we want our players to have as much game time with their clubs sides as possible. If the situation with Jens at Arsenal doesn’t improve, then we will have talks in December.”
Should Lehmann still be the number two at the London side behind Manuel Almunia, then his status as Germany’s number one for the Euro 2008 championships would be in danger.
Team manager Oliver Bierhoff shares this view. “Certain things will be clearer in the winter. In view of the European Championships, it’s important to have a goalkeeper who is playing regularly.
“If that were the case then I would advise Jens to look for a new club, so that he plays more regularly” Bierhoff told Kicker.

Lehmann Expects Imminent Return
Fri 12 Oct, 03:09 PM
Jens Lehmann has no doubts he will soon be Arsenal's number one again, but admitted he may one day return to Germany to finish his career.
The veteran goalkeeper, who turns 38 next month, has recently been hampered by an elbow injury picked up during the last international break.
As a result, Lehmann has not featured for the Gunners since August 19 at Blackburn, where his mistake proved costly for Arsene Wenger's side in a 1-1 draw.
During that spell on the sidelines, Manuel Almunia has proved a more than able deputy, with Arsenal storming to the top of the Barclays Premier League and also impressing in Europe.
Wenger admits he has a tough selection to make when both men are fully fit.
Germany coach Joachim Low has already suggested Lehmann must be back playing regular club football if he is to remain first choice for his country in the run up to next summer's European Championships.
Lehmann is preparing to face the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Saturday, and is confident he is set for a swift return to the Arsenal side.
"I know I will play for Arsenal again and think it may well be in our next game," he declared.
"Maybe this break has been good for me. Maybe I needed it. I never like being out of the team, but look what happened last time.
"The manager left me out for a few weeks three years ago and when I got my place back, I ended up having the best season of my career.
"I feel ready to come back and play to the same level again.
"I am absolutely convinced that I will play again and I am not even considering a transfer."
| Quote: | | Lehmann told the German press: "Playing is important, of course, but there is no substitute for ability. |
"Michael Ballack has been out for half a year, but he will play again and hopefully play well. You have got to make the most of such breaks."
Lehmann is on a one-year deal with Arsenal and hinted this season could be his last with the Gunners.
He said: "My wife and I miss Germany and if I still feel able to play at a high level after the Euro finals, I would like it to be with a Bundesliga club."
The veteran German, though, has no intentions of hanging up his gloves just yet.
"I have got to be fit - that is fundamental. If I mentally want it, then I am sure I can play another two years after the European Championships," said Lehmann.
"It is also possible that I give up completely after Euro 2008, though.
"My aim is to still be the number one at the (2010) World Cup and it has got to be the target to remain the number one for the team - but if somebody else comes who is better, then they have got to play."
Lehmann added: "I can see young lads with potential, but then there is the way which I have followed.
"It was a very hard way with a comprehensive training and lots of setbacks, and it is precisely by getting through these setbacks that you can say: That is the hurdle that I have set, and now the others must get past it.
| Quote: | | "At the moment, I cannot see anybody who is on this path, or will find it by 2010. |
| Quote: | | "Probably everybody would be happier if I kept going a bit longer until somebody is found who really does have their nose in front." |

Premier League - Lehmann: Almunia "disrespectful"
Eurosport - Fri, 12 Oct 11:20:00 2007
Arsenal goalkeeper has taken another swipe at team-mate Manuel Almunia, claiming his fellow shot-stopper is "disrespectful" of his achievements.
Lehmann, 37, made two embarassing errors in Arsenal's opening two Premier League games, against Fulham and Blackburn.
He has not played for the Gunners since the Blackburn game in August, apparently due to injury, although he has since played twice for Germany against England and Wales.
Spaniard Almunia has deputised since the Blackburn game, and has kept six clean sheets in his nine appearances this season as Arsenal have shot up to the top of the domestic table and are unbeaten in their Champions League group.
But Lehmann has rubbished claims that he is no longer number one at the Emirates, telling Frankfurter Allgemeine: "Almunia says that he is the better keeper.
"When I join a team, in which a goalie is number one for years and has won titles, and then fail to deliver one good performance, I find saying that a bit disrespectful."
The former Borussia Dortmund and Milan keeper still believes he has what it takes to claim back a starting place for Arsenal, citing the fact that he has come through bad form before to deliver at just the right time.
He told Bild: "I know I'll play again. I assume it'll be October 20th, the next Premiership match against Bolton. Perhaps I needed a rest."
"After Arsene Wenger gave me a rest for some weeks three years ago, I played the season of my life.
Asked about whether he was considering leaving the Gunners, he said: "I have until mid-January to return to the team. I'm an Arsenal player and I love the club.
"Perhaps [I will leave] after Euro 2008. We love London, the city is fantastic, but we're missing Germany. My wife Conny moans about not having Christmas and New Year's Eve together."

Perhaps he needs to get a life, 1st attacking Kahn now he is attacking his teammate. Almunia has been on great form and doing much better than Lamemann. SOMEONE SHOOT THIS B***H!!! He is really getting really annoying now.

Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is is said to want to take unsettled Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann to Eastlands.
Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is reportedly monitoring Jens Lehmann’s strained situation at Arsenal with a view to making a bid for the Germany keeper in January.
Lehmann, who started the season with a couple of high-profile errors, both of which led to goals being conceded, has lost his first-team place to Manuel Almunia at the Emirates.
But The Sun claims that Eriksson is keen to add greater experience to his goalkeeping options. Kasper Schmiechel, 20, and Joe Hart, 20, are both in the early stages of developing their careers.
Lehmann, 37, is out of contract with Arsenal at the end of this season and is frustrated at having to understudy Almunia, according to reports.
Lehmann is also said to be concerned that his international place with Germany will be under threat ahead of next year’s Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland if he is not playing regular first-team football.
The Sun claims that Eriksson is prepared to pay around £1million to Arsenal if he can persuade them to allow Lehmann join City in the January transfer window.
The former Borussia Dortmund stopper joined the Gunners in the Summer of 2003 as successor to David Seaman, and has twice been voted best European goalkeeper. He has also been selected for three World Cup squads.
Arsenal were yesterday linked with a possible January move for West Ham United's England keeper, Robert Green.

| Do you know what's really annoying? Reading posts that are filled with hate. I don't care if one likes a player but when you want to express a point of view then use common sense. View points go over better when adults can leave their hatred out. What stands out more is not the facts or information that is in the post but the hatred. I think we all get...you hate Lehmann. What else is there to tell us? |

Obviously you don't know the difference between what is a fact and what is an opinion. Calling someone arrogant, selfish, big headed and that he sucks is an opinion, not facts. Facts can be proven beyond the shadow of a doubt, opinions are what one holds to be true and it can not be proven beyond the shadow of a doubt. Your opinion of him is low but there are folks out there who think highly of him. Either way, both views on Lehmann are opinions and not facts. Isn't the difference between facts and opinions taught in schools?
Anyway, I don't have a problem when someone uses facts to argue their point. It's when the hatred that someone has takes over the argument that any point loses all validity. |

I don't really like Hildebrand. I'd rather that Loew plays Neuer, Adler, Wiese, Rensing or Enke in place of Hildebrand. He has never impressed playing for Germany.
SNAKE, this is getting boring. Calm down and act your age. This thread is close to being locked thanks to you. |

| lol @ lehmann during the ireland vs germany match. Sometimes he goes insane! did anyone watch the part when lehmann sprinted out of the penalty area to get to the ball before an irish player? he did not get there first but fortunately for him he made a good tackle and the ball went out for a throw. then he got booked for keeping the ball while running towards the post |
