Ten-man holders survive almighty Cup scare

09.09.2006 Bayern survived Lucio's extra-time dismissal but needed a goalkeeping howler to scrape past third division St Pauli in a turbulent first round Cup tie.

A boisterous 19,400 full house in the intimidating surroundings of the Millerntor stadium in Hamburg saw a downright poor first half display from the holders, and Timo Schultz' opener on the half-hour was no less than the minnows deserved.

But Lukas Podolski finally opened his Bayern account to level just 26 seconds after coming on as a half-time substitute, and the transformed visitors peppered the St. Pauli goal for the rest of the second half.

Lucio dismissed

The home side clung on for extra-time, but the additional 30 minutes opened with a hammer blow for the Reds when referee Lutz Wagner harshly brandished a red card at Luico after a seemingly innocuous tussle for possession.

Bayern re-grouped and edged in front with the last kick of the first period of extra-time when heroic Pauli keeper Patrick Borger turned villain, palming Philipp Lahm's harmless cross into his own net with a schoolboy error which will leave the shot-stopper with nightmares for years.

The visitors withstood the home side's desperate late onslaught to book their place in the next round by the skin of their teeth, as Pauli's resistance flickered and died with the sending off of captain Flavio Morena in the dying seconds for a second bookable offence.

Van Bommel's debut

Boss Felix Magath made three changes to the team which drew 0-0 with Nuremberg two weeks ago.

As expected, Mark van Bommel made his debut and Owen Hargreaves returned to midfield, with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Andreas Ottl dropping to the bench.

The one enforced change saw Michael Rensing deputise in goal for the suspended Oliver Kahn, Willy Sagnol taking over the armband in the captain's absence.

The reshuffled line-up, tiredness from international duty, the notorious home crowd and the prospect of the Champions League opener in midweek notwithstanding, Bayern's sluggish first-half display remained hard to explain.

Agile Rensing

The holders had Rensing to thank for turning veteran Thomas Meggle's 19th minute drive on to a post and tipping Schultz' swerving long-range drive over the bar a couple of minutes later.

However, the youngster could do nothing about Schultz' glorious first-time drive to open the scoring after good work down the right by long-serving Michel Mazingu.

The visitors' only real chance of the half came when Roque Santa Cruz headed over the bar from Hargreaves' 27th minute cross, but once Podolski had replaced Roy Makaay at half-time and used his first touch to connect with Sagnol's diagonal ball for the equaliser, the holders looked an entirely different proposition.

It was the turn of home keeper Patrick Borger to show off his skill and bravery with fine reaction saves from van Bommel, second-half sub Mehmet Scholl, and a triplet of stops from the increasingly influential Podolski.

Defiant minnows

The third division side were well and truly under the cosh and threatened only sporadically as Bayern moved in for the kill in the closing stages of normal time, but Borger pushed van Bommel's stinging drive over the bar and the scores remained level after 90 minutes.

Lucio's dismissal on 92 minutes for alleged use of the elbow against Meggle put a new spring in the weary home side's step, and bustling centre-forward Felix Luz almost sneaked in at the near post in front of Rensing, a shade uncertain against high balls all night.

But the decisive high ball of the night came off Lahm's left boot, a looping but harmless cross diverted by the distraught Borger into his own net as the keeper attempted to palm the ball over the bar.

So there it goes... Podolski's first goal and van Bommel's debut.

Podolski had a good game, but he really should have buried that chance he had at the end. Overall though he was undoubtely the best striker out there.

As regards van Bommel, I felt he disappointed me slightly. I thought he'd do better. But he was great at defending the lead at the end.

Yeah, you're right. St. Pauli were much better than we were in the first half. They created a lot of chances. I think we only made one decent chance in the first half. Thank goodness our defence held out until the end. Poldi is becoming much more influential on the pitch. As for van Bommel, I thought we'd see some new stuff going on. He did pretty well for his debut though.

the most solid man of the match was the St. Pauli keeper until he had his own goal to basically give Bayern the win in overtime. Podolski looked solid, its a shame that Magath still has a boner for Roque Santa Crap

Man, poor Borger Sad

. He put up such a valiant defense. Man of the match for sure. I really hope Magath sees how much Poldi has improved and starts him. Give him a chance with Makaay instead of Santa Cruz for once.
